Heraina chuckled. “I have met him. Misker has been trying to find someone to set him up with.”
Keera went cold. “Oh.”
“Yes. I will tell him as soon as I get home.”
“Great. Well, see you.” Keera headed for the door. She had an appointment to get to.
She headed to the medical office and wasn’t surprised to see Worro in the waiting room, watching ads for maternity wear on the screen in the office.
She walked up to him. “Wow, you are prompt.”
He got up and hugged her. “Of course. Ready to see what is going on?”
She nodded, and the receptionist smiled, checked her in, and took them to get the deep scan. She was asked if Worro could remain, and she nodded.
Time to find out what damage was left over.
Keera sat on Worro’s lap as the doctor smiled and said that everything looked good. The damage done by the needle-sharp daggers was gone. She was whole again.
She exhaled slowly. “Well, that’s a relief.”
Worro paused. “What do you mean, the damage done by the daggers?”
The doctor checked the screens and brought up an initial scan.
“The attack around her abdomen was vicious. The needles penetrated the womb and contributed to the miscarriage. Ten points of penetration. It’s amazing she survived that first attack.
It is nice to see that she has made a full recovery. ” He smiled and nodded.
Keera exhaled and moved to get to her feet.
Worro grabbed her and whispered, “Stay. I need to ask you a few things.”
She swallowed. The doctor left them alone.
“What do you need to know?”
“He attacked your belly first.”
“Yes. I had been talking to a friend about how to let you know, and he was opportunistic. He whispered that now you didn’t need to bother with me. He had taken care of it. The next few hours were just me paralyzed and crying.”
“I am going to find out who authorized my memory wipe and beat the hell out of them or into them. Not fussy at this point.”
“Okay. I am having dinner with my family tonight. You are invited if you want to come.”
“Funny you should say that. We are all meeting at Klauz’s.”
“We are?”
He nodded. “We are. There’s a dress and shoes in your office. We are leaving from here.”
“Who brought them there?”
He smiled. “You think I can’t find your office?”
She sighed. “Right. How did you get hold of my family?”
He smiled. “I met them, way back when. Wellin has grown.”
“Yeah. He has started eating like he’s starving. They will be happy for me to move out. Less food necessary.”
“You know that isn’t true.”
“Yes, but I haven’t felt this out in the weeds for years. You can find anything, but I have lost myself. I don’t know if I will ever find myself again.”
He held her, and they sat in silence for a long five minutes. He broke it when he said, “Did you have a deposition or a victim’s statement?”
“I did. Both. Nothing happened.” Keera leaned her head against him. “They just made me go away.”
“We will fix that. This is going to go public, and these policies are going to blow wide open. If they did it to you, they have done it before.”
She chuckled. “Other couples plan a honeymoon.”
“I believe this will be more of a relief for both of us.”
She smiled. “I think it will. We can ask the prefect about things at the wedding of her niece.”
“We will start it before then. Are you taking the day off tomorrow after we go to city hall?”
“Should I?”
“You might want to. Our lunch might drag on and trickly into dinner. Khasta has a ton of pictures lined up. We will be indulging her for quite a while.”
“Well, Khassi did make the gown.”
“Exactly. She wants to use you for her own amusement.” Worro smirked. “When we are done, it is back to Klauz’s, and from there, I sweep you away for the rest of the night.”
“That sounds nice. So, I don’t have to fuss or worry?”
“Nope. Just let me take care of you for a change. Trust me to be there.”
Her gaze shot to his. He smiled. “Yes, I know. I wouldn’t trust me either. I was there, and then I was gone, and when you saw me again, I was pursuing another woman. If I had been in your position, I would have beaten the hell out of me.”
“Yes, and I would have been a crazy fan who attacked a respected team member. But they would have done it quietly and topped up your selective memory.” She shrugged. “My citizenship would have been revoked, and I would have been kicked out of the country.”
“That’s very specific.”
“That’s what I was threatened with about four months after I was using the projector. I stalked you online and wanted to speak to you, so I went to a coffee shop where you were meeting with the team, and someone stopped me and told me what would happen if I kept chasing you.”
He stiffened. “Who stopped you?”
“I am pretty sure you know.”
He exhaled. “Vaika.”
“Yeah, and when Heraina was attacked and I learned that the monster who came after me was hired to do what he did, there was a sick logic to it.”
“You are telling me that...”
“The man who attacked me was hired. He was hired to come after me while you were out on a mission. It had to be when I wasn’t at work, and I had to be alone.”
He was tense under her. “I see. I should have seen sooner. Misker has mentioned that Heraina’s grandmother had twisted visions and shared them with others.
The Sethir court has been infested with them for decades.
I will ask Riithan to investigate Vaika.
If she comes out tainted, she will be given therapy; if not, she will go to prison. ”
She looked at him. “I am sorry.”
“My sister gave you immeasurable pain, but you are sorry?”
“I would give my life for Wellin. If he twists into something terrible, it would break my heart.”
Worro looked at her and smiled. “Thank you for understanding, but if it went this deep, I am not going to forgive.”
She sighed. “Good. I am not either.”
He stood and carried her out of the office, to the elevator, and up to her office.
He opened the door, and Zera was sitting behind her desk. “Oh, there you are. Keera, I need you to take the next two weeks off. Paid.”
Keera frowned. “What? Why?”
Zera looked at her and smiled. “Because Hever and Heraina freaked out all over me and passed their concerns to the team, and the oversight council is looking through the records regarding your history with your link to Worro confirmed. This shouldn’t have happened, and you did everything right.
You applied for funding, for treatments, and for assistance.
Hell, even counselling, and nothing was offered to you. That defies coincidence.”
Worro said, “Start with my sister, Vaika. She’s the most likely candidate.”
Zera nodded. “I will. I am hoping to have this off your mind by Hever’s wedding. I hear you are the maid of honour.”
Keera smiled. “Matron of honour by then.”
“Well, if you want a girl’s night, talk to Drin in textiles. The ladies can take over Hell and have a lovely party.”
“My sisters will like it. Well, Cloud will enjoy watching the wild wave of minds from one of the upper levels, and Yahtana will just have fun dancing.”
“Wait. Yahtana is your sister?”
“Yeah. We share an activation.”
Zera groaned. “Right. You had applied for the BDC.”
“Yeah, I was rejected as too unstable.”
Zera frowned. “We have a lot of escorts who have been through situations, but we just get them therapy and see if they want to continue. I am going to look into your file.”
“Great. Why am I being given two weeks off?”
“Because you are getting married, and I am refusing to let your bureaucratic nightmare continue. So, since you have a dress on the back of the door, I will leave you be but give you a hug as soon as Worro sets you on your feet.”
He sighed and set her down. “She’s set up a no-kissing rule until tomorrow, and it is driving me nuts, so if she didn’t complain, I was going to hold her.”
Keera grinned and walked around the door to get the bag with the dress and shoes. “I am going to go to the restroom. I will be right back.”

Z era looked at him . “So, on a scale of one to ten, how furious are you?”
“Oh, a solid ten. I want to tear my sister apart and hide the pieces so that even I can’t find them, but that would delay time with Keera, and she needs me right now. I am going to make every moment about making her feel safe for the time that was taken from us.”
“So, your sister?”
“Considers Keera a gold-digger. From the moment she found out that Keera was adopted, she considered it beneath me to associate with her. I wanted the opposite. I had no idea that she was a stealthed omega, but part of me figured it out.”
“Wait. That means Yahtana is probably an omega. Shit! No wonder she won’t go with Hyreno or Sethir. Family issues. Well, at least Cloud brought her back in one piece.” She smiled. “I hear that you two are going to have your reception with Krix and Hever, at their insistence.”
Worro sighed. “Yes, he ran it past me today, and since they are both wearing dresses by my cousin, it will look fine. We also have all the same friends, so it will be a lovely party.”
“Hever’s family is going to throw one helluva bash. Now, do you know where I can get some Sethir dancers?”
“Ask Khasta. She photographs dancers frequently. They asked you?”
“They thought one of the escorts might be a dancer, but no such luck. Not for this kind of endurance trial.”
“Sethir dancers that willing to work weddings are few and far between. Usually armed. The wedding dances are for fertility, and so when the males get fixated, the dancers pull a knife. At that point, the more reasonable males step in before she does. Assaulting a dancer is bad luck.”
Zera paused. “Can you make the introduction to Khasta?”
“She has a lot of privacy settings.” Worro sent the message through with Zera’s call identification.
Zera blinked as she got an immediate response. “Okay. She knows three and is checking availability. She wants to know how formal they have to be?”
“Court wedding formal.” Worro kept track of Keera’s position. “We need all the luck we can get.”
Zera nodded and passed the information along.
“Oh, excellent. She has one who has the stamina to dance from sunset to midnight.” Zera smiled. “She’s making the contact for me. The woman has a day job and will need to get time off.”
Worro nodded. “Good, so you have got that handled. Keera’s getting frustrated, so I am going to help her with the dress.”
Zera held up her hand. “I have more experience. Back in a moment.”
She left, and in under a minute, Keera was relieved and stepping into her heels. A minute after that, her familiar step was coming toward him as she spoke softly with Zera.
He had chosen the dress, but seeing Keera in it still took his breath away. It was a brilliant blue with panels inset that floated and teased him as to the shape of her legs.
She had the garment bag over her arm and was smiling. “You are very good at finding my size.”
His hands were clenching, and he got up and wrapped her in a hug. “I hope this will replace the one you had to sell. A new set of firsts.”
She held him. “It’s a very good choice. Same colour and same neckline.”
He sighed happily. “I remember that very well.”
She chuckled and said, “When is dinner?”
“We are going now.”
Zera arrived. “Klauz’s?”
Worro nodded. “Yes. We have one of the private rooms for dinner with her family and certain members of mine. And some friends. About twenty people.”
“Well, have fun. See you back in two weeks, Keera. Or see you at the wedding. Either one will be great.”
Keera gave a thumbs-up from Worro’s arms.
He stroked her back and said, “I think we should go.”
She inhaled deeply and nodded. She reluctantly let him go but took his arm and left her work clothes hanging on her door. She wouldn’t need her outfit for two more weeks. “You know, this is the strangest thing. Paid time off. Whatever am I supposed to do with it?”
They exited the lift into the main lobby. Worro smiled. “Me. You are supposed to do me.”
She chuckled as they walked out and ignored the admiring glances that they were getting. “Not until we take the vows. This is going to be a tense dinner.”
He laughed. “Keera, you have no idea.”
* * * *
Z era got the confirmation from the Sethir.
Vaika was responsible; Heraina’s grandmother had influenced her, but her jealousy of Keera had motivated her.
She had hired the assassin to torture and disfigure Keera.
She was not supposed to survive. Everything that happened afterward was to keep Keera from rising enough to get Worro’s attention again.
It seemed that fate refused to keep them apart.
Worro wasn’t kidding about his fury, but he kept it calmed for Keera.
After they were wed, he would be allowed to create a permanent link with her, and from there, he would be able to find her anytime.
Keera wasn’t upset by the prospect. For the first time since Zera had met her, she seemed relaxed and happy.
The reception the following week was going to be the event of the decade. Zera was going to break into her escort wardrobe to find something suitable. Torun was invited, and she was as well. Maybe they could dance.
