Hever hugged her mom. “Thanks. Keera’s going to be my matron of honour next week.”
Veradil smiled. “You brought her to me.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Keera smiled.
“How did you know she was there?”
“Cloud told me. She’s been chatty since before she was born.” Keera laughed. “She heard them put Hever in there and heard her call for help. She told me, and I got her to you, but then I went and got Cloud out of there, and we swam to Aksalla.”
Cloud smiled. “She swam; I stayed in my bubble. My parents were waiting for me on the beach, and they helped Keera find her new adoptive parents. I found Yahtana afterward, when she started at Z-Corp. She looks so much like Keera, it isn’t funny.”
Keera smiled. “And, because a baby was a bully, we are all here today.”
Cloud stuck her tongue out at Keera.
Hever walked in, and they all settled for the evening. Introductions to Khassi and Khasta were made. Hera would have come, but she had to get back to her babies. Same with Leska. Tirra as well. The sisters would be at the wedding, but their own families took precedence before it.
Keera got a cup of hot cider and watched the ladies chatter and smile. Her life had changed, and it had taken less than a week to go from existence to hope.
Cloud walked over and leaned on Keera. “So. Has it sunk in yet?”
“Well, Khytten repaired me, and now everything works, so either I marry him and lock him in a room for the next few days, or I drag him off and do it anyway.”
Cloud laughed. “Yeah, it’s a bit of a bitch to be at the mercy of hormones. A charming inheritance from our father.”
“Yup. I hope he’s thinking about what he did and is taking a nice deep breath as we speak.”
They giggled.
Yahtana was talking with Dex, and Khassi and Hever were talking about the dress design process and how they would work around Hever’s wings.
Cloud said, “Mom would be happy.”
“Yes, she would be. Despite our origins, she loved us.”
“Yeah, and she would absolutely be in favour of the method you used to mete out justice.”
Cloud chuckled. “Yeah, she would.”
They quietly touched and held hands, united in a flicker of grief while happiness loomed. “Who thought we would have friends?” Keera muttered.
Cloud laughed and said, “I know, right?”
They stood together and giggled, smiling at Yahtana from across the room. She smiled in return.
Keera smiled when she heard the ladies commenting that they had never had sleepovers before. It was a new experience for everyone. Even Hever had not had the experience with her cousins.
A rack of nightwear was delivered in a variety of sizes, and it had a card attached to it.
Veradil took it, smiled, and opened it. “Since this is a girl-only night, I wish you a good night and comfort. Please enjoy the evening.”
Hever walked over and saw the card. “It’s from Nautilus!”
Veradil blushed scarlet, and Hever hugged her.
Hever smiled. “The relationship is still a little new, but I am pretty sure that the moment Krix and I are out of the way, he’s going to make his move.
Well, not that move. A more permanent connection than teleporting into the dining room when I leave.
Krix and I are going to take up residence in the guesthouse, and that is where he is now, or he will be once the boys finish their evening. ”
Keera chuckled. “They are going out together?”
Hever nodded. “Krix thinks that tonight is for Worro, but I am pretty sure that Worro knows what’s what. Tonight, my pretty hero is going to be lectured by a wave of alphas.”
Keera laughed and said, “He’s going to be a changed man.”
“Well, Sgoth already got him started, so things have been looking up.” Hever smiled. “Do you have any words of wisdom for me?”
Keera looked around. “Oh, damn.” She was the only one who was in a relationship of sorts. Cloud... didn’t count.
“Um, if you need to talk, make sure you have his attention. Getting naked and then covering up will accomplish it. If he needs to talk, pay attention. Sitting and pulling his head in your lap will do it, but make sure he is facing out. That way, he will be calm and yet hopeful.”
Hever paused. “That might work, and nice tip on the direction.”
“Yeah, you only make that mistake once.” Keera snorted. The ladies laughed. Veradil seemed to be taking mental notes.
Hever said softly. “What if something bad happens at work?”
“Make him shower and then hold him. It will remove the scent of blood and death, and when that is over, all that is left is you. With Worro, I just had to sit on his lap and lean on him when he was angry. He calmed right down.”
Hever paused. “You did that today.”
“I did.”
“He was upset by something?”
“We are still getting to the bottom of my attack. We think we cracked it. The result was not good.”
“It was the guy who got Heraina, right?”
“Yes, but he worked for hire. We figured out who hired him, and an investigation was started. It was confirmed, and an arrest happened while we were at dinner.”
The room went still. Cloud asked, “Who was it?”
“Vaika. Worro’s sister. She considered me a gold-digger, and now there is evidence of her focusing on keeping me poor. Proving her assumption, I guess.”
Cloud nodded. “You might be right about that. It would be a reason to keep her from getting funding or medical care. Even her education was restricted.”
Keera shrugged. “I did okay. Everything was just paid off when I got kidnapped and ran into Worro again.”
Yahtana asked, “Why did they take you?”
“Oh, they wanted Hever, and we are known associates, so they were going to exchange me for her.”
Hever snorted. “It’s called being friends. Yeah, Krix and Worro were here when I got the news, and I had hugged you earlier, so I gave him her description, and Krix flew him to the spot where he found her.”
Keera chuckled. “And I was covered with blood from my escape—no, it wasn’t mine—and Worro had seen me like that before, which led to him getting a major migraine. The memory of me started to come back.”
Cloud nodded. “And they underwent therapy, and Worro is requesting more. He wants to head off any flares of temper and points of concern. He feels very guilty about what happened to you after the attack, and that guilt is going to spike.”
Keera nodded. “I know. I am braced for it.”
The doorbell rang, and Veradil answered. Khytten and the prefect were there, ready to join the party.
Keera’s wrist chimed, and she opened it to see a countdown clock. She replied, “Asshole.”
Worro’s face filled the screen, and she walked into the hall to talk to him.
“ So, did you know this was an ambush? ” He asked her.
“For Krix? I suspected. For you, I thought it was funny.”
“ Thirteen hours, precious one, heart of my heart, keeper of my soul. ”
“Pain in my ass.” She smiled gently.
“ Not yet. You still have your safe word?”
“Yes.”
“ Is it the same?”
“We can get naked and find out.”
Worro’s eyes got heated. “ We are going to discuss this at length tomorrow evening .”
She grinned. “Sure. Discuss. I will prepare for a debate. Have fun telling Krix to slow foreplay, and I will be here in the present Nautilus sent to the party.”
Worro’s eyes lit up. “ Find the one for you. There’s a note .”
“Talk to you tomorrow, and get this countdown off my com.”
He snorted. “ No. Pleasant dreams .”
She ended the call and smiled, walking to the rack and finding the deep red gown with the tag on the hangar.
She opened the letter and read it, getting progressively pinker as she went down the list of promises of worship.
When she finished reading it, she fanned herself with the letter and blinked at the scent of him. “Oh, he’s sneaky.”
Hever looked at her. “You look all hot and bothered.”
“Sethir poetry and endearments. He’s been using them since I accepted his proposal.”
Hever found the gown for her, and there was a note attached to it. “Krix made the gowns, and it seems Worro’s bachelor party was a Sethir creative writing course.”
Keera smiled. “Yeah, if he hadn’t gone into the teams, he wanted to be a professor at the uni. At that point, I told him we would never have met, and he kissed me and said that he was glad he was on the team then.”
Hever’s expression got soft. “Aw. That is so sweet.”
“Yeah. To other women, he was handsome and seductive, but to me, he was sweet and caring... and focused.” Keera chuckled. “I met his family. Cloud wasn’t back from the library yet. His parents liked me well enough, considering that they didn’t think I was an omega.”
“You aren’t. Are you?”
“Yeah. My shifting keeps the indicators from being as obvious, but I go into heats and can calm an alpha fairly easily.” She took the crimson gown and matching robe. “I should get changed. He put a countdown timer on my com.”
“Oh, that isn’t going to help you sleep.”
“No kidding.”
Keera changed, Hever changed, and the other ladies figured out what was for them, and they got changed. Khasta was taking photos, and snack platters were delivered, along with energy drinks and water.
Khytten hugged everyone, and the prefect was talking quietly with Hever. Keera sat on a couch and curled up, nodding off. She was safe with friends, and tomorrow, she and Worro would be legally linked.
