H ever smiled as Krix carried her up to their new bedroom. “The party was glorious. It was far better than it had a right to be.”

He smiled. “They came together for you. You look spectacular.”

“Thank you. You look stunning yourself.” They were dressed in the same colours, and it made her so happy.

“Keera and Worro look so happy. I aspire to that level of relaxed smugness.” She leaned her head against him, her wings in snug.

“As do I.” He smiled and set her on her feet at the foot of their bed. “Now, where to start?”

She grinned and slid her hands along the closure of his tunic, pushing the fabric aside to kiss his chest.

Krix murmured, “That is a great place to start.”

Hever laughed and eased his shirt from his shoulders.

She removed the hand jewellery and the necklace, setting them on the bedside table before she reached for the belt that held the robes together.

Krix took over, and she was naked in three minutes.

After that, things slowed down, but they very thoroughly celebrated their union.

W orro cuddled Keera against him. “That was a wonderful night.”

She looked at him. “It was. I feel bad for getting two wedding nights.”

He grinned. “Do you? I can line up penance for you.”

She laughed. “No, I mean Hever was so generous.”

“Ah, that. Well, she felt your pain, your loss, and your lack of support.” He stroked her hair. “She was trying to celebrate you.”

“And you had nothing to do with it.”

“Not really. Well, a little. Well, I found a few things for the prefect to make the day easier.”

“Aw, you are such a softie.” She patted his chest.

Worro asked, “Are you sure you want kids?”

“Yes. Why? Wellin wants to be an uncle in the worst way.”

He snorted. “Of course he does. Well, I keep looking for something, and when I find it, I will let you know.”

“Thanks. Nice to know you can beat peeing on a stick.”

He laughed and kissed her. “I will put that on my business card.”

She giggled against his mouth, and they slowly began to move together again. It was the first day of a new year, and the possibilities were bright.

R iithan was sitting with Salmet and looking at the files. “I recognize one of these women. The others aren’t known to me. This is horrific.”

Salmet looked at the pictures of little Hever. She shuddered and closed the file.

“What about the other issue? Keera?”

“We are going to offer her a settlement for allowing the interference that nearly cost her everything. Her family has been located and is being charged with abandonment of her mother. Their belongings will be seized and businesses closed.”

Salmet paused. “They were poor. How did they get ahead?”

“They sold their children and grandchildren. All daughters. It was lucrative.”

Salmet cursed. “Fucking hell. Is this common?”

“Thankfully, no. The bloodline was scouted, and they were priced accordingly.”

She rubbed her head. “Cloud needs to know. And Yahtana. She isn’t Sethir, but what concerns her sisters concerns her.”

“Cloud is also of Keera’s direct line?”

“Full sister.”

“Then she should know. Keera and Cloud will receive their family’s entire property if we can’t locate additional heirs. There were two other girls sold that we can determine.”

“Why doesn’t this ever get any easier?” Salmet asked softly.

Ylara spoke from her husband’s side. “Because the more you learn, the deeper it goes, and the result is not usually a happy thing.”

Riithan took her hand. “We are trying to purge the alpha obsession from our people, but it is a slow thing. We are still working to integrate our people, but there is a fixation on a working and easy link. Plus, omegas are so damned relaxing.”

Salmet snorted. “Rico has no issue with my humble self. Though you are right, I would not consider myself relaxing.”

Ylara grinned. “It comes and goes. The key is to get him all wound up to the point that he relaxes the moment that I ease up.”

Salmet laughed at Riithan’s wry expression. She then sobered and said, “Are there any leads on the other girls?”

“No, but we are working to find them. If they are alive, we want to bring them home.”

“We can make room for them here if they don’t want to go back to you.”

Riithan raised his brows. “Really? Aksalla’s citizenship is stringent.”

“We are creating a new classification for victims of experimentation or persecution. With Uradda fallen, there are so many actives who have never had anywhere to turn, and if Jeneev is an example, they are assets to any country that allows them to make a home with them.” Salmet sighed.

“But they are also dangerous and were created to be used in battle. That is an unsettling combination.”

Riithan frowned. “What about situations like Keera’s?”

“That... was a fuck up from the get-go. A hired assassin who wanted to play, a medical team who didn’t treat her as a team member, a psychic who tried to erase a mate from a Sethir, and did it to get a bribe, a jealous sibling, and a lot of hacking for pay.”

Salmet said, “I think I am going to need coffee. Lots of coffee. We are trying to nail down the exact settlement for Keera on our end. Her kids are going to go to excellent schools.”

Riithan smiled. “What did Worro say about it?”

“He is getting his own settlement, but he said to give her what she needs, and he will do the same, but if anyone tries to separate them again, he will find every nerve ending on their body and dig them out. One by one.”

“Well, he has a collection of lost gold and artifacts that would make him one of the wealthiest men on the continent, so he means it. It is what his sister was trying to protect. His money and her access to it.” Riithan shrugged. “He makes the royal family look like paupers.”

Salmet stared. “You are joking.”

“I am not joking. He can find anything he looks for. Why bother with mineral caches when he can just find lost rings, necklaces, and shipwrecks?”

Salmet stared. “Oh, I can just imagine what Keera will do when she finds out.”

A cross the city, in the woods, in a comfortable bed, the dulcet tones of an omega were heard in the summation of, “What the actual fuck!”

Birds took flight, squirrels ran in terror, and all was right with the world.
