Ismena just stared at him.
"What?" Clearly, her ears must be reacting to whatever drug these monsters injected her with because she was very sure that he couldn't have said what she thought she heard.
Wolfaraine placed a hand tentatively on her belly, his eyes filled with awe. And stark happiness. "My child... My child is growing inside you."
"No, no, I don't think so. B-But, I can't... Is that even possible?" She was at a loss for words.
Her eyes lowered to the gentle hand caressing her belly, and tears filled her eyes. Is it true?
She was so scared to hope.
"A-Are you sure?" She stammered out at last, her eyes pleading with his. It will kill her if this turns out to be some kind of a joke or delusion.
Wolfaraine palmed her chin, pinning her eyes with his, "I know I'm badly wounded, I know my senses have dulled, so I understand your doubt. But I know what I smell. Your scent has altered, Ismena. That lavender scent can never be mistaken. Trust me on this, baby. You are pregnant."
Her breath stuttered. Tears of joy ran down her cheeks like water as she glanced down at her belly again. She raised her hand and covered his hand resting on her belly.
"Oh my God... Oh my Jesus," she began crying again, her heart filled with love. Her constant dizziness, tiredness, new cravings, and nausea finally made sense.
No wonder she couldn't get her breakfasts to stay down no matter how hard she tried!
"Thank you so much. This..." He stared lovingly at her flat belly, "You have just given me the greater gift of all, Ismena."
"Oh, Wolfe," she arched forward, offering her lips. He took what she offered, kissing her with such gentleness that new tears gathered in her eyes.
Pregnant? It's so hard to believe. God, she was so emotional.
"But how is this possible, Wolfe?" She whispered when he finally broke the kiss.
His head narrowed thoughtfully, "Let's see.
.. Our union has cured your bad heart. It has healed my injuries in the past faster than normal.
And even though we aren't properly mated, you went into Crave Shock when the bond between us was temporarily broken.
All these show how highly compatible we are. "
"I guess it's not so far-fetched to think our union regenerated your cervix again, making it possible for you to get pregnant.
Not to mention that a changeling's sperm is much stronger and more powerful than a human's.
I guess I never truly thought it impossible.
I just never gave it any thought at all because it was better than false hope.
" His hand reached under her dress to caress her bare stomach.
"I figured that even if it happened, it was going to take years. I never expected it to happen so fast, so soon." He said reverently.
Her head was reeling, filled with wonder and excitement. "That must be what was going on inside me whenever you release inside me. It made my belly hurt, I thought it was because I had no uterus. Even Harhan thought so. I didn't know it was because it was making me one."
"I knew it. You always looked uncomfortable, I knew something was wrong but you always told me it was nothing."
"I didn't want you to worry, that's why." She admitted softly.
"Oh, honey." He placed a feather-kiss on her nose, "Our baby is in the wrong place, I want to reposition her probably but it can't be done now. Not when you're so exhausted."
"Wrong place? I don't understand. How do you know that?"
His lip stretched to a small smile, "I am not only an Alpha, Ismena. I'm also the King. Apart from the fact that I possess inner eyes, I have very enhanced five senses, and that includes my sense of touch. Trust me, I know."
"Oh," Panic flashed in her eyes, "Wrong position? Is our child in danger?"
"Calm down, honey. It's not an immediate danger. I can reposition her. Most changeling babies are always hyperactive in the belly so, repositioning is the first thing a changeling father-to-be learns how to do. It's not hard to do if it's from her father. Our child is fine."
"Her? Is it a girl?" She asked, her voice stronger with wonder and excitement .
Wolfaraine smiled, "I don't know her gender yet. I'll use 'her' because I don't ever want to address my child as an 'it'."
Just then, the door at the top of the stairs opened and a human in scrubs walked in. "Well, well, well... If it isn't our couples."
Their good mood evaporated and reality came crashing down at them like a dash of cold water as the stranger walked in.
For a moment, Wolfaraine had actually forgotten their situation. He'd been so engrossed in his woman and the knowledge that he was going to be a father. That for a few minutes, he'd forgotten where they were.
His back went ramrod straight. He moved protectively in front of Ismena to shield her from the human's view, swallowing a groan of pain at the sudden movement.
"Finally, I meet face-to-face with the infamous Number 6. You have been a very big pain in my ass." The man said, walking down the stairs.
"Who are you?" Wolfaraine's eyes tracked his movements, hoping the man would be foolish enough to come within grabbing distance in front of his cell. Unfortunately, the man stopped at the last stair, far away from the cell.
"I am Doctor Beloca. I'm in charge of this operation.
I'll have you know that I am very pissed at you, animal.
You have killed a lot of my men, you killed a good friend of mine, and just now, you wounded one of the best scientists, and because he's in a critical condition, he has to be taken out for emergency surgery. "
"None of that would have happened if your men left me and my people alone, Human. I am not quite done. I will kill you and the rest of your men when I get out of here." Wolfaraine stated matter-of-factly .
"Tsk tsk tsk, whatever makes you think you will ever get out of here alive?" Doctor Beloca smirked, "You are not only paralyzed, you're badly injured. I would have left you to bleed out when you were first brought in, but I still need you, Number six. We need a child from you."
An angry growl tore from Wolfaraine's throat. He hated that name. He hated these people.
"Now, if you don't mind, let's get on with it.
These—" the doctor raised his hands, revealing the injections he came with.
Lots of it, "—are for you and your girlfriend.
Not only will they make her as fertile as land, but she will also be all over you in no time.
Before you know it, you both will be going at it like rabbits in a mating season. "
At the sight of it, Ismena whimpered behind him, her hand tightening around his waist.
Her fear multiplied Wolfariane’s anger. The cougar came really close to the surface, and his eyes flashed green, "You have to come close to inject us, right? Then by all means, come and inject us."
The doctor laughed like a maniac. It grated on Wolfariane’s nerves.
"Do you think me stupid? I'm not coming anywhere near that cell, Six.
I've been preparing for you for the past eighteen years.
That cage was specifically built for you.
Those holes in the wall are not for decoration.
All it takes is the push of a button, andgas will be released.
Strong enough to put you into a deep sleep.
The injections come after." Beloca informed them smugly.
Wolfaraine stilled.
Gas? Injections?
He wasn't worried for himself, but for Ismena and their child inside her .
Those things are hazardous would do anything to ensure these monsters don't harm her.
"We don't need any of those. No drugs. I will make love to her without them."
The doctor seems to think about his suggestion for a few seconds.
Then he shook his head, "I'll have to decline that offer, Six. If you can't impregnate her in all the times you've been together with her, how sure am I that you can do it now? One of you obviously needs this." He waved the injections.
"We don't. I've been taking precautions to prevent a baby with her because I wasn't ready to have one, not because one of us was infertile." He lied with a straight face. "We don't need to be injected to have sex."
Doctor Beloca gave it a thought. The woman's body has already rejected two medications already. More could kill her, but it was a risk he'd been willing to take.
If what Six was saying is the truth, then there really is no need to take the risk of killing his important test subject. He could always use drugs if this doesn't work.
"Alright then. I'll keep this safe somewhere just in case your way doesn't give me what I want.
I have surveillance cameras everywhere in this room, so we'll be watching you both closely.
" Beloca glared at him, "I can't wait to kill you when all this is over, Six.
I will torture you until you ask for death before I finish you off. "
Wolfaraine said nothing, simply glaring at the man's back until he walked out of the door and slammed it shut. Ismena let out an audible sigh of relief behind him.
"Are you okay?" He turned and asked softly .
She nodded jerkily. Her eyes were filled with tears again, "I don't think I c-can do this, Wolfe. N-Not here, not like this."
"I don't want this either Ena, but I will do anything to protect you right now. Look at me, look at me," His hand lifted her chin until her teary eyes settled on his.
"We need to buy time in any way we can without you getting hurt." He said to her.
"What about you? You are only worried about me, but I'm just as worried about you," she cried, "You are bleeding profusely. Your wounds are poisoned. You try to make it look painless, but I can see right through that facade to know that you are in severe pain right now. It worries me."
"I'm fine, baby. I'm more worried about you. I know what these people are capable of. I don't want you to be gassed."
"Oh God," She wept softly.
"Ena..." The sound was like a stab to his heart. He gathered her in his arms, "I'm so sorry."
"Not like this. I r-really c-can't do it like this, Wolfe."
