Mia

Summer vacation is finally here. Maizie and I are at the park with Colby, enjoying a warm day and an iced coffee.

“You look good,” she says, eyeing me up and down.

“I feel good. The sun is out, I have a delicious beverage, and I’m here with one of my favorite people in the world. What’s not to feel good about?”

Maizie leans back and exhales a long breath. “Fuck, I need to get laid. If getting some on the regular has you waxing poetic, I’m definitely missing out.”

“Well, there’s a certain biker I know who has had his eye on you,” I say in a singsong voice.

She shakes her head. “Nope. No bikers. Plus, I work for the club, and that adds in a layer of shit I have zero interest in navigating.”

“So you’re not the least bit interested?”

“Nope,” she replies.

Yeah, she’s full of shit, but I don’t press her on it.

“Any plans this summer?” she asks.

“Knox is planning a road trip on the bike. I’m not sure what he has in mind, but he told me not to worry about it, that he’s taking care of everything.”

That’s a concept I’m still struggling with—that someone else is taking care of all the details. That I can actually trust someone else to do it. I realized it hasn’t always been about no one else willing to pick up the slack. Sometimes, it was about me not allowing them to pick it up. Knox has called me out a couple of times for my tendency to manage everything and everyone, though he may have used the words control freak. It’s taken time, but Knox has shown me that a part of letting go is about trusting him. It’s easy in the bedroom. Not as easy in real life. But I’m learning, and he’s patient.

Colby runs over to us, jumping from foot to foot. “Mommy, I have to peeeee.”

Maizie looks at me and laughs. “Let’s go,” she says and heads with him to the bathroom on the other side of the park.

I sit on the bench and tilt my head toward the sky, letting the sun warm my smiling face.

A shadow falls over me, and I open my eyes, turning my head to the end of the bench.

“Hey, Mia.”

Nolan stands in front of me, tall and proud, with a smile on his face that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “Long time.”

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“Business.”

My gaze travels over my brother who I haven’t laid eyes on in years. He looks the same, maybe a little more filled out, but still holds himself with that cocky attitude he’s always had. Girls used to find it attractive, but I always thought he was an asshole who thought more of himself than he had any right to. I take notice of the leather vest he’s wearing. It’s a cut much like the one Knox wears.

Looking past him, I spot Maizie making her way toward us, holding Colby’s hand. Nolan notices that he’s no longer the center of my attention and turns around to see what I'm staring at.

That’s when I see the large patch on the back of his cut and read the top rocker.

Bone Breakers.

The End

Thank you so much for picking up Mia and Knox's story. I hope you had as good of a time reading them as I did writing them. If you loved them, it would mean the world to me if you left a review here . Reviews are such an amazing way to help out indie authors like myself share their stories with the world.
