I stared at Sam, taking in her relaxed body. She looked red in the face, and her arms dropped to the table as she went limp. I took deep breaths, trying to calm my fast-paced heart.

I pulled back slightly, looking down at Sam. Her lips were swollen, and her tights were ripped to shit, as was the thong she was wearing. Her skirt was hiked up around her stomach. Her chest rose and fell quickly as she took deep breaths in.

She looked absolutely stunning as she lay there trying to catch her breath. Her hair fell around her, and the sun basked over her, giving her a soft glow.

“That was….wow.” Sam slowly sat up as I pulled my pants back up. I grabbed her skirt and pulled it down.

I reached for her cheek and gave her a kiss. “I have that effect on people.”

Sam snorted as she laughed. Giving me a half punch as she shoved at me. “Oh my god.”

I smiled at her. But a small part of me was disappointed, and I hated it. I should have been jumping up and down because sex with Sam was so different than sex with anyone else. Sam was on another level. I felt that connection, and listening to her moan and whimpering was something that had only turned me on even more. The scratches down my chest were proof of that.

And yet her magic didn’t come out. I could smell it at the surface, like it was taunting me, telling me I just wasn’t enough for her. I was so sure that sex would have worked, that it would come out. But it hadn’t, and the smell was long gone now.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, her laugh falling silent.

“Nothing,” I said, fixing the smile on my face. “I’m just amazed.” I pulled her closer, pressing my nose against hers.

I knew I wanted to keep her. I’d been wanting to the moment she walked down the aisle. But I didn’t want to push her. And if I told her I was disappointed her magic didn’t come out, it would be wrong. We did something special, and I couldn’t ruin it by overthinking. This was the first time for us.

I gave her a gentle kiss, and Sam moaned softly. I pulled a hand up to her chin and smiled at her. “Maybe we should finish this dinner.”

She nodded her head, and I helped her hop off the table.

The next morning, I was still trying to think it all over. I was disappointed because I knew she left her walls down, I knew that she was opened up, and still, her magic hadn’t come out. If sex was the way to release it, it should have come out. Which meant we had to be wrong, right?

I rubbed at my forehead, staring at my mug of coffee. What we did was magical in its own way. Just because it didn’t work this time didn’t mean it wouldn’t in the future.

I glanced at the door, knowing Sam had already left the house. I hadn’t woken up early enough, and I wanted to talk to her this morning about everything.

I took a sip of my mug and glanced at the time, knowing I had a meeting with the Council this morning.

I decided I needed to get dressed and head over. I drove, wondering why they even wanted to have a meeting with me. I already had enough on my plate to listen to whatever the Council wanted to know.

I parked and headed inside, taking the stairs in the back to the correct floor. I waved at the gal running the desk and headed down the hallway towards the room we had the meeting in before. I didn’t bother knocking as I opened the door and stepped inside.

The Council were all seated, and the one in the middle spoke up. “Morning, Jay. You’re a little early for the meeting.”

I shrugged as I took a seat in the chair that was set out for me. “I have a long day ahead of me and don’t really have time to waste. So, why did you want to see me?”

One of the women scowled and tilted her head. “Have you been trying for a child yet?”

I scowled. Was that why they wanted to have a meeting with me?

“You called me here to ask how my sex life was?”

“No, we are asking if you’ve taken your role seriously and understand the pressure we are all under to ensure we continue to thrive.”

“Are you calling other people in and asking them personally the last time they got laid?”

Someone slammed their hand down, irritated. “We are asking the Alpha of a pack! Stop being a smartass and answer the question.”

I couldn’t help but internally smirk. Maybe I was spending too much time with Sam, and her sassy nature was rubbing off on me.

I shrugged. “I don’t see why you need to know the details of the progress. You should trust that as Alpha, I take my role seriously, as do all the rest.”

The one in the middle leaned back. “Seeing as you are the first person to be paired with a human, we wanted to know if this is the correct course to take. We don’t want to waste time having you fornicate with a human if it’s not working. When the virus is over, or we have a solution, you can easily sweep this under the rug. If you're uncomfortable admitting..”

I scowled, feeling like a nerve was plucked. “I’m not sharing the details of my sexual activity because I find it disgusting if that’s what you were about to say. I don’t share the details of my sexual activity to anyone because it’s none of your fucking business.” I ground my teeth together. “And if you say human one more time in that tone, I swear, I’ll jump that table and punch.”

They all straightened a little, and one of the women smirked. “I would safely say you’ve been intimate if you're willing to threaten us so easily. When do you think you will be with child?”

Of course, I was going to threaten them. They acted like Sam was just a piece of property to me that I could get rid of when they found a solution to the virus. She was my wife, and I wanted her when this was all said and done. I would continue to want her.

She was soft and caring. Even if I was grumpy, she didn’t mind it. She understood me but also didn’t back down if I was being a dick. She was perfect for me, and I didn’t need them to make her sound like she was anything less than perfect.

“Is that all you needed? You just wanted to see if I was getting laid?”

They remained silent for a moment, and I pulled myself up, adjusting my shift. “If you request another meeting with me it better be something important because this was a waste of my time.”

“When do you think you will be having children?”

“When I feel good and ready,” I snapped back. “And maybe instead of looking at my wife for an answer, you guys should focus more on figuring out a solution for all those other people out there struggling to conceive.”

“We are focusing on an answer.”

“Having humans bear our children is not the answer! It’s a fucking band aid!” I curled my hands into fists, thinking of Nessa. I thought of all the women I knew who couldn’t bear children. “What is your solution for them? Are you going to tell their husbands to go out and fuck a human? Call that the solution?”

They remained quiet.

“My exact point.” I looked at each of them. “Find a solution for them rather than asking if I’m focusing my attention on getting laid because I’m not! I’m out there trying to find something for them; I’m trying to keep my people from losing their minds because they can’t have children!”

“You need to be a good example.”

“An example!? Really? I should fuck my wife and knock her up and parade her around like she’s the solution? She’s a person! She didn’t ask to be dragged into this! No human out there is going to scream at the chance to mate with us when you act like they are to be used like fucking cattle!”

One of them stood up. “Lower your voice!”

“Use your fucking brains.” I snarled back. “Find us a solution!” I turned and marched out. I could hear them yelling at me, but I didn’t stop. My entire body felt like it was on fire with rage.

How could they think that this was going to save us? That pairing us up with humans was the solution to everything.

I stormed to my car and yanked my phone out. I wanted Sam. I just wanted to talk with her, to hear her voice.

I called her up, and she answered. “You’re calling me in the middle of the day. Is something wrong?”

I felt my shoulders relax, and my entire body sank into my seat.

“I’m fine. I just got out of a meeting with the Council.”

She was quiet for a moment before I heard papers shuffling around, and in a whisper she said. “Excuse me for a moment.” I heard a door shut and she spoke up a little louder. “What happened?”

“Were you in a meeting?” I asked, glancing at the time. It was just a little past ten now.

“Yeah, just a budget meeting, nothing important. What happened?”

I couldn’t help but smirk. “I pretty much told them to pull their heads out of their ass and figure this virus out.”

I could hear her starting to laugh. “You didn’t.”

“Yeah, I did.” I leaned my head back and listened to her laugh. I wanted her so badly. I knew that she only slept with me the other night because we were sure it would bring her magic out. But that wasn’t how it was for me.

“I should let you get back to your meeting.”

“Oh god, please don’t make me go back in there. You saved me.”

I smiled. “Oh yeah? Was Twinkie bothering you?”

I could envision her rolling her eyes. “Joshua, and no. He’s not here. My bosses discussed going over numbers, and I just wanted to get out. So, what did the Council even want from you?”

I sighed. “They asked if we were focused on having children and if I was getting laid.”

“Oh god, what did you say?”

“I told them it was none of their business and that maybe they should put more time in finding a solution for the virus rather than if I was getting laid or not.”

She laughed softly. “I’m sure they loved that.”

“Not really, but I don’t really care.”

“Oh, really? That’s a side of you I didn’t know existed.”

I raised an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean?”

“You were a good little soldier when we had our meeting. This just surprises me.”

I laughed. “Well, this good little soldier is married and doesn’t share details with anyone.”

She giggled, and I ached for her. I wanted to pull her into my arms and hold her close. I missed her and I just saw her last night.

“Shit, my boss is waving me back. I have to go. I’ll see you when I get home.”

She ended the line, and I stared at the building. I was half tempted to go back in there and continue yelling at the Council, but it wouldn’t change anything. They were all old and would never change their views on how they saw things.
