Chapter twenty-one

Evie

" I 'll murder you if she doesn't wake up, you know this, right?

" I grumbled at Roe-el, who was rubbing her belly so much, I wondered if it would go raw.

I thought about putting some of the lotion Vaquel gave me to help soothe her skin, but it felt awkward, considering I knew what it was made of now.

Rubbing my mate's cum on her stomach seemed like a bit much when she wasn't awake to agree to it.

I glared at Roe-el because he deserved it, but also, I was abnormally grumpy from withdrawals of the mate bond with not one, but three unGor mates. Ul-Ro was kind enough to come to the surface to help me and look after Violet.

"I would accept this punishment gladly," Roe-el said with distress as he watched her. He really did care about her. I could see it in his eyes, and the tender way he fussed over her for weeks.

She still wouldn't wake up, but I watched as he bled himself and tipped her head to feed her from his blood. Apparently, that was what was keeping her alive this whole time. Necia blood promoted natural healing and gave her nutrients. Or so Medic Ul-Ro said.

She was still seemingly healthy outside of being unconscious, so there wasn't much I could say against it.

"She'll be happy," I told him, "When she wakes up. She'll be happy that you're both having a baby."

"If she does not wake, I would rather rip that offspring from her womb to bring her back," he grumbled.

Medic Ul-Ro interjected, "That isn't necessary. They are both healthy at the moment."

"But she is not awake!" Roe-el roared.

"I'm monitoring the situation," Ul-Ro assured. "The scans show that she is taking to your DNA very well, just very slowly. I've seen new tooth growth in her gums, and an accelerated healing rate."

"And her hair?" I questioned as I tugged a chunk of red hair that fell from her scalp.

"Regrowing, stronger. New follicles are forming under the scalp surface. I'm projecting that once it's finished, new hair will grow quite fast, and her new teeth are likely to be similar to ours. It is necessary to have fangs to feed our offspring."

"I could do that for her." Roe-el objected to waiting for all these changes. "She doesn't need them."

I agreed.

"Yes, well..." Ul-Ro cleared his throat and turned his attention to me. "If you could join me in the other room for a moment, Evie?"

I hesitated, but he insisted, "Commander Roe-el won't let anything happen to her."

I glared at him, because that was obviously the wrong thing to say. He'd already done something to her. But I followed him anyway.

"Has the new harness been working for you well?"

My cheeks turned rosy with embarrassment, but he was a medical professional, so I swallowed that down and nodded. "It's," I cleared my throat, "helping."

My body has absorbed everything, and Ul-Ro explained that I've become very fertile because of the effects of the kengak, a fancy term for unGor seed.

Fertility by alien seed is common to cause rutting in most species, and humans were no exception, according to him.

And according to my own body, I grumbled.

My body kept making me feel so empty, and when the kengak absorbed, the usual harness wasn't enough.

"Do you need a larger stimulator? Or would you like for me to initiate a low dosage of rut inhibitor?"

I shook my head. "You said that it's likely the root you would give me would do more than end my mating urges..."

Ul-Ro nodded. "It would likely counteract the kengak's effects, including your fertility. But that isn't why I asked to speak with you privately."

"Why then?"

"Chief Wren-Kal has been asking to speak with you.

He has made an offering of his blood to adorn your hair, as is a common mating practice for us necia.

You are not obligated to receive the offering, but I should tell you he is an honorable male and even in rut, he would wish for you to yearn for him.

He refuses to leave his hut, and has made me dose him with elder root beyond its effectiveness to stop a rut, but more knock him out until it's over.

He only wishes to be woken if you accept his mating offer. "

He was kind to me on the ship, had cared about whether I ate, and if I was comfortable , I thought with worry.

"But he'll be okay once he wakes, right?"

"He is not the first warrior to rut," Ul-Ro assured me with a smile.

"You should know, though, that a warrior like him didn't have to go into rut at all.

On low doses of the elder root regularly, a warrior can avoid rut altogether, but he went off his regular dosage when he agreed to the mating contract.

As he wanted to have a true mate, not just a contracted mate. "

"All of that sounds like he is a good man, and I'm sure he'd treat me well..."

"But, you know necia are territorial, and seen through Commander Roe-el that Chief Wren-Kal would likely not accept other mates."

I smiled at Ul-Ro. "You're a very wise medic."

He sighed. "Wise enough to know you humans cannot be swayed by displays of strength or merit of tribal honor. I'm uncertain exactly what your mating conditions are, but I hope to understand them better so I will not be passed up the next time I meet another human."

I laughed. "Why are you so set on mating a human?"

"Queen Riley fell for our king when she thought he was nothing more than a criminal with no honor.

Violet fell for Roe-el even knowing his status as commander was just a title with no ship to command.

The ship was always Mier-Lo's, and he only had command because of his escort mission under the contract signed by the princess and future ruler of Trillume.

He has no tribe to give her, but she still chose him over that of a commissioner for an entire planet.

If humans can mate for warriors in those conditions, then I have a chance to be more than a medic for the rest of my life. "

"I'm sure there are others who would see your worth beyond your title in the tribe."

He shook his head. "I would lose a Rakturan duel, and our females require winning a duel against them to be worthy of mating. I may live my whole life serving the tribe to earn privileges to bathe them, but nothing more."

I frowned.

"Evie!" I heard my name called out in desperation. I turned to find Riley rushing through the hut flap of the medical huts connected together.

"Why are you running?" I asked her, quickly meeting her halfway. She huffed and adjusted the spear at her back. She carried that thing everywhere.

"I didn't know... I'm so sorry," she said, panting.

"Didn't know what?"

"The unGor have been requesting to see you for weeks. They've been surface side this whole time. They are very sick but refusing medical treatment."

"What do you mean, they're sick?" I felt my chest clench like my heart would explode.

Her lip wobbled, and she looked about to cry, but then she angrily shouted, "Direl thought he was doing what was best for his tribe brother, Wren-Kal! He's been sneaking off in the middle of the night and I caught him doing it again this morning! He's going to regret it!"

"They're here? Are they okay?" I tried to get her to speed up and get to the point. Where were they, and are they okay?

"I'm sorry, I know you've been hoping they would come and explain themselves.

My mate was trying to do something he thought would make me happy.

He stupidly thought that if you mated with Wren-Kal that you would join the tribe and both me and Wren-Kal would be happy.

And of course, in his mind, he knows both of us would bring you happiness, so he didn't understand.

I know you've missed the unGor, and if it weren't for Violet. .. you would have looked for them."

"They agreed to have me fuck someone else to prove their bond was stronger..." I grumbled with my arms crossed over my chest. The panic on Riley's face reminded me that now was not the time to worry about the past. "How bad is it?"

"I didn't check..." Riley admitted sheepishly.

"I just took Direl's word for it and came to get you.

They said they were willing to die on Necias Prime and create a diplomatic nightmare for our tribe if they didn't get to at least talk to you.

Direl was going to wait until you completed a Rakturan with Wren-Kal before telling you anything. "

"Take me to them."

When I arrived at the cave guarded by several necia warriors, I realized that it was more than just Direl that had kept the unGor a secret from us.

Riley smashed the bottom of her spear into the ground with annoyance. "You are dismissed."

"Yes, my queen."

Another warrior averted his eyes, and the other bowed his head with reverence before saying, "We will submit ourselves to whatever will quell your anger. King Direl has said the unGor will gift the tribe with kengak to promote your fertility."

"Did he now? So he's making baby plans without me, too?"

"Never," the warrior denied. "It was to be presented to you as an offering."

I whispered into Riley's ear, "You know what kengak is, right?"

"We talked about it," she said with a blush. "Direl said it could help us with having an offspring of our own if I'm concerned about not being able to carry a hybrid species."

I wouldn't embarrass her with what it was in front of her tribe. She could decide about it later.

"Can I go in?" I asked her instead.

"Of course you can," she said while glaring at the warriors to not interfere.

They watched as I rushed past them to find Broma, Pheyal, and Vaquel sweating profusely in beds with a healer rubbing herbs on them.

"What's wrong with them?" I asked her.

"Evie?" Broma croaked, but when he opened his eyes, they were all milky and glassy, like he couldn't see. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Forgive me."

Vaquel muttered out, "Don't mate with the necia. Remember, I'm too greedy to share you."
