Chapter ten

Evie

" U gh," I groaned with a horrible headache. Even my body felt like shit.

"I'm told the way our brain feels like it's been split in two is normal for being in the stasis for any longer than a month." A feminine voice snarked from my right.

"Consciousness should be returning, Evie. I'm pleased to see your vitals are optimal for your recovery."

"Bode?" I questioned the familiar voice, but it was the girl who replied.

"It's Violet. We're in the 'recovery' room before we're allowed to leave the ship. We've apparently been docked at the Trillume Station for a few days already, but they're taking their sweet time to release us. Some adventure, right?"

Holding my head together didn't make it feel any better, but the way the girl tapped her foot against metal wasn't helping any. She was obviously impatient to leave wherever this was. She said we were on a ship?

"I was able to add your file to the incoming human transport to protect your transfer to Necias Prime.

An amiable system named Indi was accommodating to including you in the medical revival process with the rest of the humans," Bode spoke in my ear and I wondered what kind of weird dream I was having until I heard the girl's voice again.

"What kind of contract did you sign?" she tried to make small talk, but I'd been through this process before of arriving on Trillume. I pried my eyes open to recognize the room I was in. We weren't on the ship anymore.

"This isn't the ship," I said out loud.

"No?" She shrugged and looked around.

"This is the Trillume docking station," I explained as it was explained to me last time, "Like the airport border checkpoint.

After being removed from the stasis chambers, shuttles transport cargo planetside.

Ships don't usually dock unless they need repairs, and they are docked at the station orbiting the planet. "

Another groan echoed behind me. The room was filled with humans recovering from stasis.

There was a comfort in seeing I wasn't alone, but on a table a few rows back, I saw the large form of a necia warrior bending over his own knees barfing.

I squeaked and scrambled back, but the girl with fiery red hair stood up like she'd fight whoever came at us.

It was like she expected to meet violence regardless of any other assurances and that instinct of hers made me want to gravitate towards her.

It was foolish to think she'd protect me from a universe where nothing I wanted mattered, but for some reason, I thought she'd try.

She was taller than me and walked by my side as we were funneled out to meet the hosts of our contracts. Once that was me, looking forward to meeting Ter-ak and feeling giddy about having an alien mate. I knew better now.

I flinched at the sight of the trill escorts and held my breath as they scanned me to confirm my contract information.

Violet stayed by my side, not saying a word until the crowd thinned and all that was left was us. Trill escorts waited at the exits and watched us carefully. None of them recognized me and I started to relax enough to process that Violet had asked me another question a few minutes ago.

My answer was delayed, but I still replied regardless. "My therapist said I needed to get out of my comfort zone."

Violet laughed. "There are less extreme ways to push boundaries than to completely jet off planet, but I guess we aren't that much different."

I didn't think she'd tell me why she'd chosen to join the exchange trade, so I didn't ask.

Then I saw him. A large necia warrior with his spikes on full intimidating display of lethal potential.

I wasn't sure how I was supposed to mate with one of them like my contract wanted me to, and if I was honest with myself, I didn't want to mate with anyone anymore.

Without realizing it, I had grabbed onto Violet like she'd stop this contract from taking me to a planet I didn't want to go to. My ears were ringing, and I felt my anxiety make my skin sweaty and my breathing difficult.

"I'm unable to regulate this abnormality in your physiological response, Evie.

There are no tranquilizers stored in your implant for me to prevent further damage to your heart.

As your designated AI service companion, I will suggest you hold your breath then release the air slowly to trick your body back into normal patterns. " It was Bode again?

So, I wasn't imagining them?

I grumbled under my breath, "You're the reason I'm here."

The necia warrior lifted a brow at me as I hid behind Violet, and I had to think fast so I added, "Um, are you taking me to Necias Prime?"

He agreed, but he didn't seem pleased about it as he assessed me with disdain and Violet took a step forward, her hands on her hips like she'd fight him if he got out of line.

"Where's Beth?" I tried to ease the tension between them. Beth had helped me get this contract, and I saw her in passing in the recovery room. It was odd to see someone that worked at the headquarters on Earth to be on Trillume.

"How long?" Violet asked abruptly, effectively increasing the tension between them once more with her no-shits-given attitude, and I found myself smiling. When the warrior didn't respond, she clarified, "To get to Necias Prime, how long?"

"Around a week in Earth cycles," he grunted back with equal authority that Violet pushed back at him.

"Perfect, let's get going then. Unless, you prefer standing around staring at each other?" Violet said while grabbing my arm and rubbing a comforting circle with her thumb like she was signaling that she wouldn't let me face this unknown future on my own.

I was so thankful that I could cry, and I already felt the tears welling up as I squeezed her arm.

"Let's get going," the warrior grumbled and walked away.

His strides quickly overtook even the large legs of Violet's hasty retreat.

I doubted she knew which shuttle we were going to, and I lifted a brow at how the warrior didn't try to belittle her for almost heading the wrong direction but simply went ahead and guided us the rest of the way.

For such a scary male, I watched as he matched his strides to not be me too fast but fast enough to still lead us while not making us rush more than our preferred pace.

Maybe… the necia warriors wouldn't be as bad as I thought.

"Thank you," I told her that I knew she'd get in trouble for helping me, but I didn't want to be left alone with him, even if he was showing a small kindness.

"Didn't you get a file on your host?" she asked from the side of her mouth like she was a puppeteer throwing her voice.

"He looks like he's going to eat us," I confessed, though I didn't want to admit to her the full reason for my distrust in any of the trade agreements after my experience so I added that my host had kinder eyes than this one.

The only eyes that appeared in my mind were the unGor's as he made my toes curl, and I shivered.

"I've got something he could eat," she said in a sultry tone that made me giggle. We weren't so different after all, just like she had said.

Conspiratorially, I told her some of the things Bode told me about necia warriors, "They like to claim their females with an audience.

" I cleared my throat, awkwardly hesitant about saying something so personal to essentially a stranger, fully aware that the warrior in front of us would likely hear everything we were saying.

Necias warriors also had extremely good hearing, but I needed to know what kind of reaction a grumpy escort would have to overhearing humans talking about them.

Would he quietly retaliate later, like Ter-ak had?

Violet chuckled and leaned over into my ear to tease, "Looking up sex with a necia warrior because...?"

I flushed with embarrassment. "It's just... I like to know what I'll have to deal with for the next year." If I was careful then I could avoid my mate contract and return to Earth.

"What happens on Necias Prime stays on Necias Prime," she said with a wink, misunderstanding my interest. Her sass and acceptance were refreshing. I found myself gravitating towards her, and I didn't want to let go of that sunshine.

Suddenly, Violet was tugging at me to speed up, and we forced our escort once again to adjust his pace to continue to lead us to his shuttle.

A light shined over us to scan our contracts.

Would this be where I'd be forced to part with Violet?

I clung to her arm, squeezing my eyes shut for the intercom to start blaring in alarm.

"Which one of you doesn't even have their data processed for transfer?" The necia warrior grumbled from the inconvenience.

My heart flipped. Was it me? Would they force me to return to Ter-ak?

"Anchor H Fifth Trillume destination Necias Prime authorization Commander Roe-el code Seven Zero Zero Three N Deck Mave Hel-le," he said before he looked between us suspiciously and added, "Don't try remembering the code, it changes every time I use it ever since the imprisonment of Necias Prime's king. Security is on high alert."

His shoulder spikes grew larger, and he used his full height to intimidate us with a glare in his eyes to warn us, "If I have to bring you back here because your authorizations don't pass my security chief's inspection, I'll make sure it's the last exchange you ever have."

"Commander Roe-el, was it?" Violet moved between us and gave him an equally hard stare in return. "If you threaten her again, I'll make sure incomplete authorizations are the least of your worries, capisce?"

The necia warrior grinned like he was amused with her and then took a step forward to close the gap between them like I wasn't even in the room.

The tension between them both was palpable.

They were definitely going to fuck. Good for them , I thought with a sad smile.

I can only hope Violet gets a better experience than I had.

They were basically eye-fucking each other already, and I watched the way they bantered aggressively back and forth. It was like a dance between predators.

"It's a common mating practice to threaten their intended mate, to encourage our adrenal glands to enter a state of rut.

Demanding a show of strength in public conquest, Violet.

" Commander Roe-el said seductively, letting his tongue caress the way he said her name, making even me shiver as an observer.

Perhaps there was some validity to their customs of exhibitionism in their mating rituals. I could honestly say I didn't want to look away as I watched them tease each other.

"Threaten me again," he told her, "and I will think you are intending to let me conquer you for all to watch."

He straightened up and turned his back on her to add, "You are lucky no other warrior is here to witness, or I might have had you learn our customs without a warning."

If that wasn't an invite, I didn't know what was , I thought with excitement.

It was like watching a naughty movie, and I wanted to reach for some popcorn.

That was, until Violet huffed and crossed her arms to turn back to me.

As soon as I was noticed again, my cheeks heated like I was caught in observing something I shouldn't have.

The door opened for us to enter the shuttle, and I was saved from having to explain why I didn't speak up to help her.

A beautiful necia warrior addressed us. I'd never seen a poster of a female necia warrior, but it was clear that it was only because humans had conservative views on public opinion that didn't include exposing female nipples, while a male's nipples were perfectly acceptable for the exchange posters.

She wore the same leather-looking pants as the male warriors, and she had leather harness straps that held a pocket resting under her right breast. The harness served to accentuate her breasts with no purpose in covering them.

Commander Roe-el and the female warrior were speaking before I heard my name and checked back into the present. "This human is Violet, and the other is called Girl."

Girl? I choked, covering my mouth from laughing.

Roe-el didn't seem like the type to joke around much.

Realization hit me that Violet had been calling me Girl as a term of endearment without actually using my name.

The way Violet's cheeks heated, I took it that she finally realized that the necia warriors have excellent hearing and heard our whole conversation, including the one about giving him something to eat between her legs.

With all eyes on us, I found myself flushing along with her.

"Your humans are changing colors," the warrior Mier-Lo, who had been introduced as the commander's second, said with disinterest in whether there was actually something wrong with us or not.

She reminded me of Ter-ak. Different species, but the same attitude towards humans.

She reached out for me, before Violet stepped in, and all I heard were screams echoing in my ears.
