Chapter 74
Azazel
Azazel spied the enormous shape of the Fallen trailing the fence, and in his tightly-fisted talons, Dina’s eyes were closed.
We have to do something, Rebecca thought.
It’s too dangerous for you.
Rebecca wedged her elbow into Azazel’s side, spread her arms wide, and formed a massive flame. She flung it at Samael.
He swatted it aside, adjusting another gargoyle as though her flames were an annoying fly buzzing around him.
He’s so strong, Rebecca thought.
He channels all the magic of Primoria . But I’m not entirely without my own gifts.
Azazel called his earth magic, twisting massive tree branches around Samael's ankles and feet as he raised his arms, sending a cyclone of air funneling down on the fallen. It crashed into him, knocking him back, and he stumbled, breaking free from the trees to fall into the wall.
It knocked several gargoyles out of place, and Samael shot an icy glare at them. He lifted his hand as crimson flame flared to life along his arm.
Hold on to me, Azazel ordered as he shot into the sky, racing to escape the flames barreling after them. Although fire was once his to command, it answered to a new creature now. A memory from Rebecca’s dream flickered in his mind. Send me your flames. Ignite your fire and feed it to me.
Rebecca spread blue-tipped fingers and pressed her hands into his chest.
Flame licked along his arm, running up over his shoulders and back down the ridge of his wings. When it had completed its circuit, he lifted his arm, calling the fire to him. Elation stole through him as flames burst from his palm.
It worked! Rebecca fed him more of her magic.
Keep going, don’t hold back. Azazel spun in the air, diving for Samael, shooting balls of flame at him.
Samael growled loud enough to rattle the treetops as he swung his enormous hand. It met them mid-air, catching Azazel and Rebecca in a gust of wind as Samael used his newest gift to send them flying.
Azazel tried to fight Samael’s wind, to wrestle his most potent elemental gift under control. Still, Samael’s magic was too strong, forcing Azazel to wrap his arms and wings tightly around Rebecca as they collided with the side of the house and continued through the wall.
He slid to a stop at the end of the third-floor hallway and unfurled his wings, releasing her gently.
“Rebecca... Light.”
She was motionless, her lashes resting against pale skin.
He cupped her cheeks, leaning closer. Light, wake up. Please.
Creatures raced up the stairs, rushing toward him. He erased them with less than a thought, sighing in relief when he heard the soft beat of Rebecca’s heart in her chest.
He laid his head down on her stomach, a tear sliding down his cheek as he listened to that steady rhythm.
“You’re heavy. Get off,” she grumbled.
He laughed, tears falling freely as he brushed her wild curls from her face.
Her eyes fluttered open, meeting his, and she smiled. “Did we get him?”
“Rebecca?”
Her head swiveled toward the voice from the top of the stairs, and Azazel growled low in his throat.
“Simon?”
