Chapter 55

Sophia

Sophia cracked one eye, dreading what she would find when she returned from another fruitless night in the in-between.

“Pythia,” a soft voice whispered. “Pythia, are you awake?”

She swung her head between arms extended overhead, groaning as she found Helena beside her, sitting against a wall, her arms and legs bound in similar manacles.

“Yes, Helena,” Sophia answered. “Are we en route to America?”

“Yes. We boarded this morning while you were sleeping.”

The gloomy metal room she found herself in was tiny. She might not have known they were on a ship but for the rocking sensation and the immense pull of the ocean just beyond their walls. It had been only one night, and traveling from Turkey was at least an eight-day journey by sea. Her arms ached at the thought of eight days in this position.

“Have you seen any of the others?” she asked.

“Only Maria, “ Helena said. “She brought food and water a few hours ago.”

“Galanis?”

“No.”

“Bouras?”

“No. ”

“Dimitriou?”

“Kavraz.”

“Maria Kavraz?” Sophia asked. “But she’s been missing for months.”

“Apparently, she has been with Elizabeth all this time.”

Sophia winced. Yai-Yai would have been so relieved to know her dear friend was alive, but she couldn’t tell her now.

She tugged at her restraints, testing their strength. Spelled, like all the others. Her heart sank, knowing there was no escape from them, but her spirits lifted just a little, remembering Elizabeth’s words about the truth of Rebecca’s condition.

She was still alive. And a Naphil.

All these months, Sophia had been in the presence of an angel—and she had dared ask Rebecca to sacrifice herself for them. What a fool she had been. But they were headed to her now, and Sophia vowed to spend the rest of this new life making it up to her.

That began with a new plan to end Elizabeth.

“Helena, if I tear my arms from their sockets, would you be able to heal me?”
