Chapter 26
Rebecca
Rebecca would have known they were close to Athens by Sophia’s agitation, even if the city’s ancient beauty hadn’t given it away. As they approached, speeding over a sea of white, the architectural dream glittered in the distance.
“Is that the Acropolis?” she asked.
“Yes!” Sophia beamed. Pride in her home burst from her. She leaned closer to Azazel’s ear, saying something Rebecca couldn’t understand.
He nodded and dipped low, banking left, and scanned the coastline.
You know Greek? Rebecca asked.
I know all languages.
Show off . She smirked.
He slowed, dipping closer to the coastline, and Sophia pointed, shouting excitedly.
They approached a massive modern structure lined with high fences and an infinity pool dropping off to a view of the ocean.
Rebecca swiveled her head to Sophia. “That’s your house?”
Sophia laughed as they landed on the back patio, moving to the back door with preternatural speed. She slid it open and stepped into a pristine, white living room surrounded by glass on three sides .
Rebecca and Azazel followed her through the entrance, past white couches and paintings of the ocean, waves, and the sky lit by lightning.
“I’m sensing a theme,” Rebecca said.
“Cora! Daphne!” Sophia stepped around a massive dining table into the kitchen and pulled a floor-to-ceiling refrigerator door wide, reaching for a bottled water. “Are you thirsty?”
Rebecca took the proffered bottle, twisting the lid and taking a drink.
Sophia turned a corner and marched up a set of white stairs. “Maria? Ari?”
Rebecca started up the stairs, but Azazel reached for her hand, pulling her back.
“Rebecca. Something’s not right here.”
Rebecca glanced back just as a crash sounded from above, startling her. She lurched away from him and ran up the stairs.
“Sophia?!” She took the stairs two at a time to the fourth floor. When Rebecca reached the top step, she peered into the first bedroom. Sophia was crumpled on the floor, a lamp smashed beside her.
Rebecca slid to her side. “What is it? What’s happened?”
Sophia held up a blue sweater smeared with blood. “They’re gone. She’s taken them. Even the witches here.” She sobbed. “The entire coven is gone.”
Rebecca wrapped her arms around the girl, and she dropped her head onto her shoulder, sniffling.
“We’ll find them.” She ran a hand over Sophia’s hair. “We’ll save them.”
Azazel stopped at the door.
She looked up, motioning him to leave, but he stubbornly shook his head. Instead, he stepped into the room and sat on the bed; Rebecca rolled her eyes.
“Can you give us a minute?” She asked, returning Azazel’s raised eyebrow with a scowl. “Maybe you could search the area to see if they’re close by?”
His other eyebrow ticked up, a clear no in his expression.
“It would be easier for me to track them.” Sophia stood, wobbling on her feet.
Azazel caught her, steadying her. “You haven’t fed. You’re dangerous in this state.”
“I have. A little. ”
Azazel’s gaze moved from Rebecca to Sophia and back, landing on the side of her neck, still covered by her coat.
Shit, he’d heard her thoughts.
His eyes flashed, grip tightening on Sophia’s arm.
“Az, stop.”
He stood, dragging Sophia with him out the door.
“Stop!” Rebecca yelled, chasing after them.
He pulled Sophia down four flights of stairs as Rebecca ran after them as fast as she could, nearly tumbling with the speed. But she caught the railing, steadying herself, and followed them out the door.
“Don’t come back until you’ve found someone to feed on. Someone other than my other half.”
Sophia darted away blindingly fast and was gone before Rebecca reached them.
“You asshole! Her whole coven is missing, probably dead, and you chased her out of her own house!”
Azazel frowned down at her, eyes dark. “I told her not to touch you.”
“I let her.”
“Lie.”
She ground her teeth. “I would have. If I had known how hungry she was.”
“No one touches you against your will.”
Rebecca crossed her arms, glaring up at him, but she didn’t have a response to that. He wasn’t mad that Sophia had done it. He was mad that she’d taken something from Rebecca without her permission. How could she be upset with him for that?
His gaze softened. “She’s your friend. You might have helped if she asked. You might not have, but it was your choice. No one gets to take your choice from you.”
Rebecca swallowed, her mind tripping over his words.
He held the backpack out to her. “Will you come with me to Patmos?”
