Chapter 69

Azazel

Azazel lifted a finger, lightly tracing the Hyades pattern running over Rebecca’s back. It dipped along her spine, sprinkling over her ribcage. He hadn’t meant to leave those marks on her hips, but her feral thoughts had incensed him, and the savage beast inside had taken over for a time.

She was healing quickly, a side effect of her Naphil abilities, and he was grateful for that. Next time, he would be more careful, though.

“What are you doing?” she mumbled, rolling over to face him. Her sparkling sapphire eyes met his and danced with amusement.

“You’re awake.”

“So I am.” She pressed the pad of her finger to one of the dark swirls trailing across his chest, eyes widening as it moved down the ridge of muscles along his abdomen and disappeared beneath the multicolored duvet she’d draped over them.

Rebecca bit her lip as her thoughts turned sultry, and he lifted the blanket obligingly.

She sucked in a breath. “You really never get tired, do you?”

He chuckled darkly, sliding multicolored fabric down her hip, exposing perfect creamy skin. “Never. ”

A shudder rolled through her, and he pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her. She fit perfectly within his arms—she was made for him, after all. Azazel could think of no place he’d rather spend eternity than here in this bed, with her tucked against him.

Rebecca sighed, hearing his thoughts. Her warm body pressed against his, sending a fresh wave of arousal through him, and he hugged her closer, nipping her earlobe.

“We can’t stay here forever,” she whispered against his cheek. “There’s a world-ending apocalypse we need to stop.”

“We have time.”

Rebecca wriggled in his arms. Speaking of time, I have something to show you .

He loosened his hold as she rolled over, her back against him, and the curve of her ass pressing against his arousal made him groan. Light, you’ll kill me.

“Shhh.” Rebecca spread her fingers in front of her, and he watched as she wove them through the fabric of her world.

Inside their small bubble, time stood still. Azazel had lost that ability when he’d given up fire, but he hadn’t regretted it then, and he didn’t now. He would never regret giving up any part of himself for her.

She twisted back to face him, her lips parted in the most devastating smile his soul had ever witnessed.

“Breathtaking,” he whispered.

Her cheeks flushed as she bit her lip. “I’ve stolen a few moments just for us.”

He stroked her pink cheek, wrapping his finger in one ebony curl. “Would that I could steal them all.”

She exhaled a long sigh as her hold on time released, and they sped forward the few moments they had lost.

He sensed one of his kind outside and sat up. “Stay here.”

He disappeared, hoping she would heed him just this once as he materialized outside the door.

“Astaroth,” he seethed. “What brings you to my mate’s door?”

“Your king commandsss your presssence.”

Azazel clicked his tongue. “He has his general. What does he need me for? ”

“The place isss not oursss to quessstion our king.”

Azazel landed just as the door handle twisted, and Rebecca stepped onto the porch.

“Demon!” she yelled, raising one hand to call her flames.

Astaroth backed up, glancing up at him. “Will you let her harm one of your own?”

He snorted, crossing his arms over his chest. “Absolutely.”

Rebecca tossed her ball of flame at the creature; it evaporated and dropped into a nearby shadow.

“He’s there,” Azazel said, pointing to Astaroth, tucked into the fold between darkness and light.

Rebecca’s grin was feral as she hurled ball after ball of fire into the darkness.

Astaroth moved again, disappearing around the side of the house, and was gone.

“What did he want?” she asked, coming to stand beside Azazel.

Even after they’d lain together more times than he’d thought her mortal form could safely handle last night and this morning, his whole being strained to be near Rebecca, to take her back to their tiny moment in time and remain there with her forever.

Her cheeks flamed, telling him she’d heard those thoughts. Not that he had tried to keep them from her; Azazel could deny her nothing.

“He wants me to return to Primoria.”

Her smile fell. “Will you go?”

“No, but I fear our time is up.”

Dina landed beside them on the porch, glancing over his nude form and Rebecca wrapped in her blanket.

“Have I interrupted something?” she asked.

“Astaroth came proclaiming I am needed in Primoria,” Azazel answered.

“You can’t mean to fight with them, brother. ”

To Rebecca, he sent the thought, Get dressed. Others will follow . To Dina, he said, “Of course not.”

Rebecca nodded, turning to go inside.

“When I last left Primoria, he was preparing his demon army to march on the human realm, but he was waiting for something. I would have felt if they crossed over.”

Dina nodded, darting her gaze at the door. “Have you warded the house?”

“I cannot ward against my own kind.”

Dina turned, stepping through the door into Rebecca’s foyer. She raised her arms overhead.

“Dina. You can’t.”

She looked him over. “You aren’t a demon.”

“I plan to use the lance to lure him in.”

“Why would you risk it?”

“It’s the only thing that would bring him to me rather than forcing me to come to him.”

Dina’s snow-white brows dipped low over swirling iridescent eyes. “What is your plan?”

Azazel moved past her, going down the hall until he reached the stairs leading to Rebecca’s father’s lair. “I plan to use the gargoyles to trap him. They won’t hold him for long, but I only need moments.”

“If he marches with his army, you’ll be no match for his might.”

“He’s faster than they are,” Azazel said. “It will be over before they arrive.”

“You leave too much to chance, brother. If we ward the rest of the house and leave only one opening, I can seal it once he’s inside,” Dina offered. “But even this seems like too great a risk.”

Azazel ran a hand over the hair along his chin. “It’s our only shot. If I can’t end him, I fear this war will be lost. Raise your wards, Dina. When you’ve finished, Rebecca will unlock the case and call him to us.”
