The next fewhours were a blur.
I took some aspirin, which didn’t help. I crawled in the back of a big black SUV. Dana got in the passenger seat. I was happy she was coming along. I liked her.
”We’re just loading up the bikes and we’ll get you up north where you’ll be safe.”
“They think I’m dead.” I adjusted on the seat. “As long as they keep thinking that, I’ll be safe.” I wiped the tears off my face.
“Is that why Mase didn’t kill you?”
I shrugged.
“I heard about Mase Scott.” She grabbed my hand. “The man doesn’t miss.”
I nodded and settled against the seat.
James crawled into the driver’s side. “We all set?” he asked.
“Yep.” Dana said.
“I guess.” I lay down on the leather upholstery. It felt cool against my cheek.
“Listen,” he turned toward me. “You’ll be safe. You’re one of us now.”
“Why?” I winced from the pain. “Why are y'all helping me?”
“Because you need help.”
“We are Guardians.” Dana grinned. “It’s kind of what we do.”
I smiled back at her and turned toward the window and watched the sun come up.
I prayed they wouldn’t regret it.
