S till fighting jet lag, I fall into my seat next to Brenna.
"Welcome back, hon, I missed you." She beams at me, and I can't help but return her smile.
"I missed you too," I say genuinely, but offer nothing else. All I can think about is caffeine and crawling into my bed in approximately nine hours. After a very short trip to the UK, I’m back at work on a Monday morning, like nothing ever happened.
My body didn't have long enough to catch up to the different time zones.
Brenna bites her lip a little, like she is scared to break the silence. "Well…did you spit on his grave like I told you?" Brenna was incredibly serious about that and I can't help the laugh that makes its way out of my mouth.
"Didn't seem appropriate in front of his parents." I continue laughing, almost maniacal.
"Yeah, that seems completely fair." She nods in agreement and starts to laugh herself. "I need coffee, and judging by the bags under your eyes, I would say you do too?" The last bit is phrased like a question.
"I always need coffee, Brenna, that would be amazing." I sigh in relief at the words coming out of her mouth. She had my attention as soon as she said coffee.
"Anna has booked a meeting with you at eleven," she says, getting up from her desk.
"Oh god," I groan out. "I'm gonna get fired for taking last minute leave, aren't I?"
"Not a fucking chance, she needs you too much. Not everyone is against you, hon. You're great, remember?" She squeezes my shoulder.
"I am pretty great, aren't I?" I give Brenna a shit-eating grin as she leaves to hunt for the nectar of the gods.
