“How’s the marketing department?”
“Still marketing away?” Though this time it came out as a question.
My body was still trembling from his pleasurable assault. I only hoped no one noticed my slightly disheveled state.
“You know I love you, right?” he whispered.
The sound of those words made me feel like I’d been kissed by heaven itself.
“I love you, too.”
“Take off the jewelry,” he said. “Place it back on before you leave work.”
“I definitely will.”
“How am I doing so far, Ms. Lauren?”
My gaze swept up to the photo of him that I kept pinned to the back of my cubicle. It had been taken from behind as a silhouette so no one would guess it was him.
“I can go darker.”
THE REDBUGATTI WAS SQUARELYparked in the subterranean structure of The Dionysus Club on One East Sixtieth Street, right next to a silver Lamborghini Veneno. I had to drag my gaze away from the roadster’s sleek lines and promise of speed.
I threw my Bugatti car keys to the valet.
I’d been in one of my “fuck you” moods when I’d bought the Lamborghini, days after I’d arrived in New York—a kind of rebellion at coming to terms with leaving my beloved profession and taking on the kind of responsibilities that would keep me awake at night. Maybe I was hoping I’d transition smoothly into a man willing to take the hardest punches as well as deliver them.
What the hell was Shay doing here?
I whipped my phone out and stood behind a pillar hoping my call would go through. With only one bar I said a silent prayer to Dionysus himself, God of ritual madness and infertility, which was in-keeping with a men’s club.
“Hey, you.” It was Penny, my old executive assistant back at Enthrall, a dynamic psychologist and world-class dominatrix.
“Quick question,” I said, diving right in, since we’d known each other for years and she’d gotten used to my attitude of business before pleasure.
“Anything, you know that.” The warmth of her enduring kindness came through.
“Password for The Dionysus Club in the Big Apple?”
“I thought that was behind you?”
“I’m here, outside, waiting to get in.”
“One minute.”
Since she’d put me on hold, she must not have the answer but she knew someone who did. This request could have been construed as wrong—me following my head of security to some unknown location. But I sensed he needed me, and I wasn’t about to ignore that quiet inner voice that had always served me well.
“Ready?” Penny came back on the line.
“I am.”
“It changes each week according to my source. Chances are you won’t get inside. The Mayor’s a member and some other politicians, too. Be careful.”
“I need to get in.”
“The password is Midas.”
“As in Midas Touch?”
