No, I wasn’t going to let his stark beauty throw me off balance. Now more than ever I needed to be strong. “I want a fair crack at the whip.”
His brows shot up.
“With my project,” I clarified. “I want you to consider my design and you can’t do that if it looks like you’re favoring me.”
“Favoring you is my perk.”
“I’m serious.”
“This is not an invitation to misbehave.” He pressed his firm chest against mine.
My gaze flitted to where I suspected the surveillance camera might be.
He tutted. “Fuck the cameras.”
“What if security gossips?”
“I’ll fire them.”
I broke his gaze because it was easier then looking into his beautiful face, no matter how sincere he was trying to be.
“I’m serious,” I said, stepping back. “I want you to consider my design.”
I’d worked tirelessly on creating that stylish new packaging and it deserved to be in the running.
“Present yourself to my office…sansunderwear,”he mouthed. He rested his hand on the arch of my back and pulled me toward him. “In your desk drawer you will find a velvet box. Proceed with it to the powder room in precisely five minutes.”
“What’s in it?”
He stepped back and sipped his coffee.
My gaze shot to the door and I realized I’d arrived at my floor. My face was on fire as I stepped out and turned to look back at him.
His glare locked on mine. “Follow my order precisely.”
The elevator door slid closed.
Weaving through the cubicles, I quickly reached mine. It was tucked away in the far west corner, and actually had a spectacular view. My desk was just how I’d left it, neat and organized, with those renderings ready in the manila folder for my presentation. Coming in early had enabled me to catch up on all my paperwork.
Peering over the top of my cubicle, I caught sight of my boss Dana walking toward her office—the ends of her short black bob hitting her sharp cheekbones, rounding out her black power suit and spiked heels. I ducked down hoping she wouldn’t see me as she entered her office. I enjoyed the work that went into being one of her assistants, but I didn’t exactly hit it off with her. Then again, she didn’t seem to hit it off with anyone.
When the coast was clear, I removed my jacket and flung it over the back of my chair, then shook my mouse to waken my screen. I had just enough time to check Facebook.
My iPhone pinged and I looked down at the text from Cameron:Now.
Feeling as though Cameron were still looming over me, I rummaged for the key in my handbag and then used it to unlock my bottom drawer, only now realizing Cameron had a copy. I reached all the way back and removed the velvet box. My mind spiraled with the possibilities of what I was going to find inside.
My thoughts screeched back to Cameron’s words last night.“Welcome to the far side of the forbidden, Ms. Lauren.”
I flipped open the lid.
Oh, okay, just breathe and try not to look like you’re about to fall into a conniption fit.
Three long, diamond-studded strands fell loosely between my fingers—and at the end of each were delicate clamps. With my sex tingling in anticipation, I wondered how this jewelry was meant to be worn.
A rush of movement brought my head up.
“What’s that?”
