Chapter Forty-Eight
Jett
“ T hora Silvers has Grace’s eyes and was a piano prodigy.” I turned the computer around to show Brennan a photo of a very young woman.
“Oh, I see it,” Brennan said. “There weren't as many similarities between Thora and Grace as Grace and Nate, but yes, I can see it in the eyes and smile.”
“This is wild,” Wes breathed. “Not only was Thora a sigma, but her dad and one of her brothers were executed for being sigmas. She also had an identical twin who was suspected of also being a sigma, and her name was… fuck. Rosalind is Grace’s mom’s name.”
“So, somehow Grace and her mom’s identical twin got to Grace’s world?” I frowned. “I can’t even fathom that.”
This whole thing was a massive mind-fuck. Like the plot twist where this Adriana person had a history with an organization that liked to terrorize scientific companies, even though she was a chemistry professor. Spencer’s old company was on that list.
My belly rumbled. I hoped the food Brennan ordered from the bar at the top of the building would come soon.
“Maybe we should just go to them? I can book us a flight.” Brennan got on my laptop.
“Wait, let me see where the jet is.” Wes started typing.
Riley looked up from her laptop. “What jet? Our Jett is right here.”
Spencer had a jet?
“The Compass BioTek jet that we use for work. There’s an app that we use for booking. Spencer took Grace on it both for safety and because it’s a work trip.” Wes looked up. “Yeah, the jet’s here… he sent it back today. Oh, he must have done that in case he needed to bring us out in a hurry.”
“Spencer has a jet? Why didn’t I know this?” Brennan asked.
“It’s technically the company’s.” Wes was texting. “Spencer says to hold off for the moment.”
“Okay, but maybe we should get Evan?” Brennan rubbed his chest.
“That’s a good idea,” I agreed. Sure, Evan was really helpful over at the Center, but I’d like him to be with us. Brennan and Wes might be a little more settled as well.
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Brennan called.
Oooh, was our food here? Yeah, I know, there was a whole lot more to worry about than my stomach, but I could focus better if I had something to eat.
“Hey Sport, can we talk?” Frank Morris, Brennan’s dad, walked in. His brow furrowed. “Is everything okay?”
“Nothing I want to talk to you about,” Brennan snapped as tension flowed through our bond.
His hands went up. “Hey, I’m on your side.”
“Riley, did you know there’s a free soda machine?” Wes stood. “Let’s get some.”
Riley huffed. “Fine. Jett, you coming?”
I looked at Brennan sending him all my love and support. “I’ll stay here. Get me something good.”
No, I wasn’t going to leave Brennan alone with his dad. Not only did I want to show my support, but everything happening had frayed him and I didn’t want my husband to snap.
Wes and Riley left but didn’t close the door.
“What, Dad?” Brennan sighed. “I’m not dropping the case against Mother’s lawyer.
I should have done this years ago, but I kept trying to go about it the right way, stupidly thinking that she’d change her mind.
It’s also not just about money. I’m sick of being treated like a child, and sick of fearing that she’s once again going to try ruining my life because I disobeyed her. ”
“I know. I’m not here to ask you to stop,” Frank said quietly.
“You’re not?” Brennan frowned.
He wasn’t? I didn’t have any issue with Frank other than that I thought he should stand up for his son more. He was pretty fun to watch sports with.
Frank shook his head and sat down. “I’m pulling everything that was entrusted to Ian that’s from my side and giving it to you. I’m sorry. I didn’t know I could do that until Katie told me this morning. She looked it up or something.”
Wow.
“Thank you.” Brennan looked surprised.
That surprised me, too. My husband had been fighting for this for so long.
“Also, while I knew that there were things tied up that your mother didn’t want to liquidate, I was under the impression that you’d been given other things. I let her handle all that, and well, Ian’s loyal to her not me and won’t tell me anything.” Frank sighed.
“I can see that. And I appreciate it,” Brennan replied.
Brennan and his dad didn’t have a bad relationship, they just didn’t have much to talk about other than rugby and the foundation. Sometimes I wondered if Frank was disappointed that none of his children went on to play professional rugby.
“I don’t like being called Sport,” Brennan blurted.
“Oh. You don’t?” His look went concerned. “Sorry, Sport, I mean, Bren. I’ve been calling you that for so long, I never realized it. I… I’ll try not to.”
“I’d like that.” Brennan looked a little bewildered.
“I’ll have the documents sent over.” Frank’s eyes flickered over me and the laptops. “Can I help with anything? Or are you conducting espionage?”
“It’s about Grace. But we’ve got it,” I told him.
Frank’s look stayed worried. “Okay. I like Grace. I know I tend to let your mother take charge, but I’m on your side, Bren. I always have been.”
Yeah, he was. It just wasn’t always enough against the Queen Mum.
“Even though I technically own your foundation building?” Brennan retorted.
“We can go back to operating out of your mother’s company building.
For the record, I was against buying the building with your money.
I was against cutting the scholarships, too.
But she said that if we didn’t cut those, we’d have to cut the summer sports programs due to the drop in donations.
I figured that you’d start your own foundation or get Spencer’s company to do it.
All my money is tied up, so I couldn’t save the programs on my own.
I… I love those programs,” he confessed.
“I know.” Brennan’s voice went rough.
I squeezed Brennan’s hand. Before the accident, he’d helped his dad coach youth rugby.
“We saved the scholarships,” I added.
Relief flooded his dad’s face. “I’m glad. I’m proud of you, Sp–, I mean, Bren. You have a great pack, a successful company, wonderful mates, and you have your integrity. It’s all I could ever want for you.”
“You’re proud of me?” Surprise filled Brennan’s voice.
“So proud. Honestly, out of all my kids, you have accomplished the most with the least amount of help. I marvel at your strength. While I know the dinners aren’t your favorite, I like showing you off to my friends.
Especially the obnoxious ones. Oh, your son works for who?
My son owns luxury hotels all over the world ,” he told him.
“It’s always the same party at the same place,” Brennan grumbled.
“I know. If I have to go to the HighTower one more time…” Frank sighed, then stood. “Anyhow, I’m here, Bren, okay?”
“Okay.”
With one last look at me, Frank left. I wrapped my arms around Brennan, comforting my mate.
“Do you think he’ll really give you what’s yours from his side?” I wanted to believe Frank. But I also didn’t want to see Brennan hurt because it was some trick of the Queen Mum’s.
Brennan nodded slowly. “It would be a start.”
“He said he was proud of you,” I added. My phone buzzed.
Evan
Wrapping up. I’m on my way.
“He did. Wow, Katie was right.” He texted someone, probably his sister.
“Can we come in now? We have the food.” Wes came in and put the food on the meeting table and moved his and Riley’s laptops.
Riley dumped a bunch of drinks on the table.
“Evan said he’ll come over soon,” I added, glad we got some food for him.
“Good.” Brennan looked relieved.
“I think after we eat and Evan arrives, we should pack our shit and take the jet regardless of what Spencer says,” Wes said as he dug into his burger. “I’m not sure what else we can do from here and we know where they’re staying. We can always go to the hotel and wait for them.”
“I mean, there are things that I want to do to this Adriana person.” Riley took a loud drink of lime soda.
“Me, too,” I agreed, grabbing an energy drink.
“Perhaps later, once Grace is safe. Um, the sister pack wants to form an alliance,” Brennan added, looking at his phone.
“I mean we already sort of have one?” I shrugged.
“I like them. Do you think they’ll let me babysit? I’d be a good babysitter.” Riley shoveled more food in her mouth.
“Yeah, I mean why wouldn’t we have an alliance with them?” Wes nodded. “I think you’d be a good babysitter, too, Ri.”
“I’ll let her know that we’ll form an alliance.” Brennan texted her.
We continued to eat our burgers and fries. Well, Brennan had onion rings.
“So, are we going to Grace?” I asked. “I think we’ve done all we can here. Spencer shouldn’t have to deal with everything alone.”
Brennan looked at Wes. “You’re right. Wes, go ahead and steal the jet or whatever. Grace is one of us, and we should be there for her.”
