Chapter Fifteen

Evan

T he smell of delicious rotisserie lamb drifted in off the back porch. That was part of Lexi’s delivery fee. My phone buzzed.

Lexi

Got the package, delivery en route.

I texted my sister Sonja as I plopped down on a chair on the patio, to enjoy the afternoon breeze and the lake view.

Me

Lexi has Riley and is taking her to the cabin.

Sonja

Thanks for letting me know.

When do I get to meet Grace? When’s the wedding? I’ve heard so much about her from Riley that I feel like we’re besties.

Sonja and Grace besties? Actually, they’d probably get along well or at least have a lot of respect for each other. I replied.

Me

Don’t worry, I won’t use your date. Do you have one yet?

She was younger than me, lived outside Portland with her fiancée, and worked at an exclusive academy for gifted students. It was her dream job, and she was so happy.

Sonja

We were thinking of eloping. Thoughts?

Me

I volunteer one of Brennan’s resorts. We’ll cover the costs. Promise we won’t crash.

Unless you want us to.

I sent her a link to his properties. Spencer and I had already talked about offering to pay for it.

Sonja

I always forget that your packmate owns luxury hotels. Actually, this might be nice. We’ll look it over and get back to you. Thank you.

Me

We’ll probably get married next May. Get together soon? I’d like you to meet her.

Grace and Sonja’s fiancée might get along, too.

My sister knew a bit about Grace. We texted frequently and talked occasionally, mostly regarding Riley, but other things slipped in there.

Riley had sent a bunch of pictures. There were texts from my other sister Sasha, berating my life choices. There was a reason why Riley did things with my sisters without me.

Sasha

You’re letting Riley ditch school? Seriously? What kind of guardian are you?

We didn’t get along. I’d made mistakes, like letting her, Sonja, and my grandparents bear the brunt of caring for Riley for far too long. I’d tried my best to own up, apologize, and make amends.

But when it came down to it, it was me awakening as an omega that Sasha had the biggest problem with. With a sigh, I replied.

Me

It’s two days.

Sonja didn’t have an issue as long as Riley did her homework. Riley had already made arrangements to get assignments and notes.

Sasha

I can’t believe that you went on a vacation without Riley.

Me

It wasn’t a vacation.

I sighed again. Sasha knew what it was for. But she didn’t like me to talk about anything omega-related–my job and mates included.

Sasha

Why are you telling her that she’s a theta?

Um, because she is a theta? This time, I didn’t respond, I just sent the test results–and the follow up testing. Then I texted Sonja about it.

Sonja

None of this is your fault. You know Sasha.

Sasha had been one of those little kids who’d dreamed of awakening as an omega and being ‘special.’ She was devastated when her middle school prick-test marked her as beta, though we fully expected it, given we had beta parents and our family’s mostly beta.

When I awakened as a surprise omega in my twenties, she got her hopes up, and every year she hadn’t blossomed made her more and more bitter.

While thetas weren’t coveted like omegas, they were exceedingly rare.

Rarer than deltas, but not as rare as iotas or kappas.

I wasn’t actually sure where that gene even came from; especially since thetas were closer to alphas than betas.

They were hyper-independent misanthropes who liked collecting wealth. Yep, that was my baby sister.

So, I could see Sasha being angry that two siblings became something other than a beta. She’d also been a little jealous of all the extra attention Riley got growing up because our parents were gone.

My phone buzzed again.

Sasha

Who the fuck is this woman you’re letting around Riley?

Me

Grace is Wes’ other mate. She’s a mathematician and works for Spencer.

My sisters all knew Spencer very well. Why was I even doing this? I loved Sasha. I just didn’t know how to fix things between us.

Me

If you’d like to meet her we’d be happy to visit or fly you here or meet someplace at my expense. It looks like you three had an amazing time. I appreciate you spending your spring break with them. It means the world to Riley.

I love you very much and I hope you have a safe trip back and that your studies are going well.

Sasha was at her dream university studying to become an anesthesia nurse, after having completed numerous smaller courses while living at home and helping with Riley.

Shoving my phone in my pocket, I went inside to find Grace. She was in her room, curled into a ball, smothered in blankets, watching the boats on the lake through the window. She smiled when she saw me and opened her arms. Warmth shot through the bond.

“You want me to join you?” I asked.

“Yes, sir.” Grace gave me a smile that always made me hard.

I joined her in her nest, holding her to me. “Riley will be here in a bit. Do you want to watch a movie? Take a nap?”

Grace pressed her face into me.

“Or we could go find an alpha and have blowjob lessons,” I teased.

She laughed and I kissed her freckled nose. It was nice to see her laugh.

“Are you doing okay? A lot of things are happening all at once. The stuff with the temporal dudes, my heat, you and Spencer really becoming a thing…” I loved seeing her with him.

“I keep thinking about dicks,” she said softly.

I grinned as my phone beeped. But I ignored it. “I think about dicks all the time. Dicks in me, dicks in you. Fuck, I keep seeing you full of knots. It was so hot.”

She blushed. “Should we talk about this kind of stuff? Kiss and tell and all that.”

“Between me and you, yeah, I think we should. I know so much of this is new, and I want to make sure you’re okay–and I have a burning desire to know what it feels like to nap on a giant cock.

” While I wouldn’t have the patience or be able to just relax and go to sleep without being satisfied first, it still would be fun to try.

“It’s amazing and I don’t know why I want it all the time.” She hid her face in me again.

“Hormones. It’s normal to want your alphas. Especially right now.”

“Okay.”

“Spence may not have bonded with you yet, but he’s yours. You know that, right?” It was obvious in the way he doted on her. This morning he’d surprised her with an electronic book reader, with an unlimited book subscription, given she’d been reading a lot.

“Spence has a giant dick.” She giggled into my shirt. “Not that I have an issue with yours and Wes’.”

“Spence is being good to you?” I needed to make sure that she was okay. I wasn’t afraid to talk to him if she needed me to.

She nodded. “Spencer makes me food and feeds me while I’m in the bathtub. He hides little surprises for me.”

Her ears sparkled with tiny peach blossom earrings, not unlike the necklace he’d given her for her birthday. Just tinier, like little every day earrings.

“You can save the food for his bathtub. Drinks and chocolate only in mine.” The idea of dinner in the bathtub was weird to me. But if it made her happy…

Still, she could clog his drain with dropped food.

“Also, he’s really good at back massages.” She made a happy noise.

“A lot of alphas are good at stuff like that–especially alphas like Spence and Bren. Ooh, Bren gives a foot massage like you wouldn’t believe.

Hey, make sure you talk to Spence and communicate.

Especially since I’m pretty sure you’ve never been with anyone like him before. ” I ran my fingers through her hair.

She looked up at me. Surprised.

“I’ve literally known that man my entire life. You think I don’t know what he’s into? He’s perfect for you.” I was dying to ask more. Like did she call him Daddy?

“He thinks we don’t eat right, the whole pack, but especially me and you.” She made a face. “Apparently, I drink too much coffee.”

I ran my fingers through her soft hair. “He’s right. The whole pack has crap eating habits, but you and I, we’re the ones that really should take care. Different designations have different nutritional needs. Believe it or not, it makes a difference. Have you watched that module?”

Probably not. It would help her hormones. All those years of her eating garbage because she couldn’t afford decent food had probably seriously affected her. Not to mention, her world might not even have some of the nutrients she needed. That could be why she was so small, even for an omega.

“So, you teach omegas to eat properly but eat crap?” Her eyebrows rose.

My head rolled to one side then the other. “I guess that because I do zero cooking I feel bad asking for certain things? Each designation has little differences. But we could make small changes–not necessarily getting rid of coffee, but other things.”

“I guess.” She rolled into me. “How do I separate feelings and biology? Do you have videos for that?” Her voice was muffled by my shirt.

“I do. You can talk to me about anything. Bren’s a good dude and he’s trying to deal with his issues.” That was probably what she and Brennan were talking about last night.

She and Brennan were only starting to develop any sort of friendship. For them to have such intense intimacy in a very vulnerable moment might be confusing. Though I was glad I remembered most of it, because it was beautiful. He was tender and caring with her–and that gave me hope.

“I think that you and Jett should start something privately, just the two of you.” I stroked her hair again.

“Would you be okay with me being with Jett?” She looked up at me. “I liked being between you two. He was also really kind to me when I was scared.”

I hadn’t known that, but it didn’t surprise me.

“I fucking fantasize about it,” I grinned. “Please, take my dudes, as long as you don’t try to replace me, which I know you won’t. Sometimes, I might want to watch or participate.” I snuggled her back into me. “Though, I’ll share you with Jett anytime.”
