Page 20 of Doxed

Briar walks through the house, the hood on her hoodie pulled over her head as she stares down at the floor. I hold my breath as I watch her walk past my office door through my security cameras.

She continues down the hall and into the gym before opening the large pocket door a crack and stepping out onto the back deck.

My curiosity gets the better of me, and I get out of my chair and follow her. If she’s going to run, she’s poorly dressed for that. Bare feet, tiny shorts, and a hoodie that almost reaches her knees and swallows her delicious figure.

On quiet feet, I enter the gym and stroll toward the door that she left open. She’s sat on the outdoor sectional, her legs tucked into the hoodie in front of her.

She stares out at the trees; the rain falling onto her carelessly. The forest is silent, with the only sound being the rain ticking as it hits the pool cover and the wood deck.

It's peaceful. This is my absolute favorite thing about living here. I also love to come out here and sit in the quiet. Smell the trees, the rain, and the soft ground. In all my life, I've never experienced this level of tranquility.

Her head turns as my feet tap against the wood and I walk to her. Her deep green eyes look haunted and tired, the line between her brows deepening with stress.

“I have so many questions about you, Miles.” Her voice is strained, and I stay quiet, standing in front of her now. “But for now, I can let them go if you tell me you can find the girls from the club.”

I run my tongue over my lower lip, considering. I've already told her what happened to them. They're gone. Either dead or in a cage somewhere. But I nod my head anyway, because luring her into a false sense of trust will help me in the long run and hurt her a whole lot more.

“You can find them?” Hope fills her voice as she bolts up from the couch. Her big eyes widening even more.

“Yeah.” I nod again.

I turn around without another word and leave her standing on the deck. I didn't expect her to care so much about the girls from the club. It takes me back a step. This isn't how I imagined her.
