“The Jackal has your brothers Massimo and Luciano, and my brother Nicolo,” I tell her.
She gasps. “What are we going to do?”
“He wants ten million Euros to secure their release,” I reply. “Talk to your father for me. The Jackal is having a meeting tomorrow. We can follow the Tunisians, find out where they’re meeting. Then capture him, or fight to free our family members.”
“I’m not sure I want to risk my husband’s life like that,” she replies. “The ransom sounds the better route.”
“Ten million Euros,” I repeat. “That’s a lot of money. And there’s no guarantee the Jackal will keep his word.”
“My father might be able to help you come up with the ransom,” she tells me. “As will Massimo’s other brothers.”
“All right, we’ll keep that as an option,” I tell her.
“What about Rosa?” Angela asks. “The Jackal has her, too?”
“He says he doesn’t,” I reply.
“And you believe him?”
I consider for a moment. “I think I do. He has no reason to hide her from us. If he had her, he would have paraded her out and threatened to kill her if I didn’t do as he asked. But she never showed up. So no, he doesn’t have her.”
“Then who does?”
“That’s the question, isn’t it?” I answer. “I plan to find out. I want to rescue her today. I have to. Can you tell me where she disappeared?”
She directs me to a cafe on campus. “I’ll have her best friend meet you there. Michela. She was the last person who saw her.”
“Thanks, Angela,” I tell her.
“Be careful,” she tells me.
“You too,” I say. “Keep me updated on your father Giovanni and the ransom.”
“I will,” she replies.
I hang up.
Time to find Rosa.
“Cateno, head toward the campus,” I tell him.
“You got it, Boss,” he replies. He drives in silence for a moment, and then glances at me. “You’re worried about her.”
“Damn straight I am,” I reply. “Whoever took her is going to pay with their lives.”
Cateno nods. “It’ll be an honor to help.”
“Thank you my friend,” I tell him.
I just wish I knew where to find her.
The cafe she disappeared from is the only lead I have right now.
The Jackal was right: we have many enemies. It could have been any one of a number of different mafia families.
I’ll work it out somehow. I know I will.
I can’t lose her.
