“I need to get dressed. The service is going to start soon,” I whispered.

Easy pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “I love you, Birdie.”

Such simple words that meant so much. Words I felt to my core.

“I love you, too, Easy.” It was crazy to feel such a huge loss but also to gain a love like I had for Easy.

“We’re gonna figure this out, Birdie. We’re gonna get through this. You and me.” he promised.

With Easy next to me, I knew we would be okay.

Eventually.

I just wished Layla could have been here to see my happy ending.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

“Do you think we should cut him off?”

King glanced at Snapper and shook his head. “He’s fine.”

Snapper emptied the last of the bottle of whiskey into his cup and tossed the bottle in the trash. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.

Layla’s memorial service had ended a couple of hours ago, and Snapper had been steadily drinking himself into oblivion.

“He doesn’t seem fine to me.”

King shot back his whiskey and slammed the glass on the counter. “None of us are okay, brother. Let him be.”

“Lo!” Meg called.

We both turned, and Meg stood at the front door with Ransom and two uniformed officers.

“What the fuck?” I whispered.

King stood and nodded to Ransom. “They waited as long as they could, Easy.”

“This is fucking bullshit,” I spat.

King put his hand on my shoulder and held me back as we watched Ransom and the cops approach Snapper.
