CHAPTER TWO
Coffee Knot Tea Coffee Shop, Haven
M y pulse roars in my ears. Adrenaline rushes through me. Hypervigilance is how Piper and I have survived.
Piper is trembling.
Then my nose wrinkles at the scent of vanilla bourbon that’s washing through the coffee shop.
Instantly, I relax.
I know that scent as well as my own.
It’s the scent that means protection.
Family.
Unconditional love.
The Alpha who is prowling through the shadows is one who has already bled, fought, and risked his life for me.
I hold onto a shred of faith that there are good Alphas out there because of this man. He has put Piper and me first every time, hiding his own pain to bring us happiness.
I can never repay him.
He’ll always be the best big brother in the world, even if he likes to act like a villain.
Chase Wolf.
I bite my lip, hoping that Chase didn’t hear my revolutionary speech. I made the decision about going on the mission to save Jin without talking it through with Chase first.
What will he think about me taking such a huge risk?
Even if he tries to stop me, however, I’m going ahead with this mission.
I tilt up my chin, defiantly.
I’ll never back down, when my Ice Dragon needs me.
I stroke over the glittering dragon on my t-shirt compulsively.
“Bro!” Piper leaps off the counter excitedly, scrambling across the shop. “You’re here, Wolf. Just in time.”
Piper throws himself into Chase’s arms, wrapping himself like a tiny limpet around the much larger Alpha.
Chase doesn’t even pause but continues to swagger toward me, carrying Piper with him like he weighs nothing.
Piper nuzzles happily against Chase, purring.
Chase quirks his pierced eyebrow, which matches Piper’s (luckily, our Head Alpha finds it adorable how much his younger brother looks up to and tries to copy him).
“Just in time, huh? Is that just in time to hear that our sis is planning to take on the entire music industry singlehanded? Go on a one Omega rampage against the Idols? Or plan an undercover mission without talking it through with her Head Alpha first?”
Shit, is he angry?
I wince, before counting out on my fingers. “Yes, yes…and yes.”
“Hmm, good work, Little Wolf. You’ve learned your lessons from me well.” Chase smirks.
Moonlight streams through the shop across the sharp planes of Chase’s face. He’s a couple of years older than me, tanned, athletic, and tall.
He’s dressed in tight but well-worn black leathers.
When I take a deeper breath of his scent, I can smell the oil mixed in with the vanilla bourbon.
He must have been out on his motorcycle again.
Chase is hardworking with his bonded Feral pack and busy on missions where he takes the lead in the BPU. On top of that, he helps out in Coffee Knot Tea.
He finds his escape in the mountains’ open roads on the back of his Harley…or with Harley, his Omega.
I have a feeling by the swagger in his step that he’s been riding both of them today.
Chase’s silvery hair is unusually wild.
I try not to laugh.
Helmet hair.
Chase’s eyes flash dangerously, before he twirls around unexpectedly and makes as if he’s about to drop Piper.
Piper screams but in enjoyment at the thrill and not in fear.
I roll my eyes.
Chase has played that trick ever since Piper was seven years old and upset that we couldn’t afford to go on the rides at the annual carnival like the other kids.
Chase invented a whole host of ways that he could give both Piper and me mock thrills for free.
Can I blame that for turning us both into adrenaline junkie Omegas?
Piper is laughing now, as Chase dumps him unceremoniously back onto the counter.
Then Chase checks over the tray. “This can stay hot for a bit, yeah?”
Piper nods.
I reach and grasp Chase’s hand. “I need to do this mission.” Of everyone, Chase should understand. He risked his life by taking on the mafia underworld and saved his bonded pack, the Ferals. “It’s important.”
“You’ve only been going on about it for…how many months…or is it years…?”
“Decades,” Piper draws out the word.
“Hey,” I narrow my eyes, “don’t gang up, Wolf Brothers.”
Chase ducks under the gap in the counter without bothering to lift it like he’s weaving in one of his fights.
I eep, as he backs me against the wall. He cages me with his arm casually resting above my head.
I swallow. “If I go undercover, I’ll be careful.”
Chase’s midnight green eyes become icy. “You won’t. I know you, Little Wolf. You’re as reckless and impulsive as I am.”
“I see that as one of our best family traits, along with our sass.”
Chase bares his canines and looks as deadly as he is: A killer with a heart of gold. “So do I. Along with our banter.”
What?
I tilt my head. “So, you’re not trying to talk me out of this…?”
“Why would I? It’s about time that there was an Omega agent out in the field.
Plus, you’re thirty today. As I said, I know you.
If you don’t have some kind of adventure like this, the big 3-0 will trigger you to battle for something even more ambitious like becoming the first Omega in space, transforming America into an Omegaocracy that you rule as the first Omega Queen, or even bonding with a Traditional pack. ”
I shudder. “The first two would be fun, but if I ever have a crisis and attempt the third one, you have permission to burn all my Jin merch.”
Chase whistles. “You don’t mess around.”
“You’re awesome, bro. See, Bliss?” Piper beams. “He always has our backs.”
Piper has grown up hero-worshiping Chase. But he doesn’t remember our dads. Chase needed to be big brother and parent rolled into one, when he was barely more than a kid himself.
Whereas, there’s only three years between Chase and me. I know my brother’s flaws. I witnessed how much he struggled and hurt, while we were both able to hide the harshest realities from our little brother.
I know the type of things that happened to teenage Alphas who were desperate for money on the streets.
Being taken under the wing of an ex-Seal to be trained as a cage fighter may have saved all of us, but it also condemned Chase to hell for over a decade.
Chase eases back from me, smoothing down his silky locks to tame them again.
“So, you were out on the Harley again?” I tap Chase on his leathered chest.
He flushes, before sighing like he’s remembering a happy but filthy memory.
Typical Chase.
“Just keeping a promise to my Beta to take him out for a ride.” Chase winks. “And to let him ride me , while we did it.”
Piper scrunches up his nose. “TMI, Wolf.”
“TMI?” Chase replies, attempting to sound innocent and failing. “But I haven’t even told you yet what impact the vibrations had and how—”
Piper growls at his much larger Alpha brother, causing Chase’s mouth to snap shut.
Only in our family could an Omega Reject do that.
Only in our family does Chase laugh and casually lean against the wall, rather than drag Piper to the floor and beat him for his insolence.
I worry that Piper will never find a pack of his own.
Chase has raised us like equals.
How will Piper find a pack where he will be safe? Where he knows… absolutely knows …that when he throws himself into an Alpha’s arms, he will be caught? That they will only ever pretend to drop him? That scares are to thrill you and not terrorize?
That an Omega can growl at an Alpha?
For a moment, Chase catches my eye. He’s clearly feeling the same fears.
Then his expression clears. “So, this reckless, impulsive mission of yours. I’m all in. Also, I heard that it was someone’s birthday but I may be wrong, in which case you won’t want my gift…”
I flick him on his nose.
And in what other pack can an Omega flick their Alpha on the nose?
Chase looks regretful. “Seems you don’t want your gift.
And it would have been the first step on your mission as well.
You know that my scent match is a male Omega, Rook, who is a Grandmaster in chess.
He’s at least five steps ahead of everyone.
It’s sexy to be outsmarted even in bed. Anyway, my Rook knows that you’re obsessed with Jin. ”
“Called it,” Piper says, smugly.
“Brothers.” I cross my arms. “I’m always outnumbered.”
“Rook chose your birthday gift. It’s from all my pack.” Chase slips his hand into his pocket. “But you don’t want it, huh? Strange, I thought that all Omegas wanted gifts.”
I make the grabby hand gesture.
Chase slides out two metallic blue concert tickets and passes them to me. “Happy birthday, sis.”
I stare at the tickets in shock.
In the corner is the same dragon band logo as is looped into a musical note on my t-shirt.
On the top is Jin’s performance name in mythical text:
JIN AND IMMORTAL FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY IN THE BETAS OF ROCK CONCERT
I light up with excitement.
V.I.P Journalist Pass is marked in big letters at the bottom of each of them.
My eyes widen. I itch to grab the tickets.
I hold myself back because I can’t believe that I am truly going to be able to attend the concert of the century.
Piper gasps, diving off the counter.
He’s thrumming with energy as he bounces up and down.
“Where the hell did you get those? Jin is only singing for one night tomorrow. It’s being streamed globally.
Shit, fans have been going crazy because they can’t get hold of tickets.
Being able to attend in person is like finding a golden Willy Wonka ticket. ”
“Are these real?” I whisper.
“Nope, you’re dreaming right now.” Chase pushes his silvery hair back from his face. “And I’m your fairy godmother. Also, sorry to break it to you, but Willy Wonka also doesn’t exist. Do I need to give you the speech about the Easter Bunny? The Tooth Fairy? Santa?”
I glare at him. “I meant, are these fake ?”
“How dare you imply that I would… Okay, I can’t even pretend to be offended because I totally would fake them. Forging paperwork is one of my many talents. But these…?” Chase shakes the tickets. “They’re the real deal.”
“How did you manage this?” I snatch the tickets, hugging them to my chest.
I’m going to Jin’s next concert.
