“I think Romero keeps his documents in Diana Bergman’s safe,” I told Hiroshi. “The question is at which home. The woman has several, and she’s currently married to the old Duke of Glasgow.”
Just as I reached for my phone, it vibrated and I answered it, not recognizing the number but knowing it was France’s country code.
“Hello?”
“Amon, it’s me.” It was Darius. He had been tailing Reina for weeks and keeping her safe. My instincts flared and dread pooled in my stomach. Something was wrong. Darius never called, only sent brief messages on non-events that happened during his watch.
“What happened?”
“I got arrested,” he grumbled, but I knew this wasn’t the reason he was calling me. He knew how to get himself out of trouble without my help. “So did the Romero girls and their friends.”
God motherfucking dammit.
“Isn’t your job to prevent that from happening?” I growled. He didn’t answer, and frankly, it was fucked up to put this on him. “Where?” Dante watched me with furrowed brows as he listened to my growling.
“Saint-Tropez.”
My brows furrowed. “Why are you there?”
I could hear his heavy sigh over the line. “The girls hopped on the train without warning. So I followed. I figured you’d have wanted me to.”
“You did the right thing,” I acknowledged. “I’ll get you out.”
“Don’t bother. I’m already on it. I can get the girls out, but if Reina is released to my custody, my cover will be blown.”
He had a point there.
“What exactly happened?”
“Some idiot, Dietrich something, groped her sister and then tried his luck with Reina. The blondie wouldn’t have it, so she gave him hell.”
That’s my girl.“Can you get me info on this Dietrich guy?”
“Yes.”
“Good. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” I ended the call and immediately typed a message to my pilot to get the plane ready.
“What’s wrong?” Dante asked, watching me curiously.
“It’s Reina and her friends.” I stood up and grabbed my keys, already halfway out the door. This put a dent in my birthday plans for her. “They got arrested.”
A heartbeat of silence was shattered by Dante’s slightly maniacal laugh. If we didn’t find a criminal to torture soon, he’d explode. After his kidnapping and accident two years ago, it didn’t take me long to realize that torturing men provided him with relief.
I stopped by the door and glanced over my shoulder. “Hiroshi, since you’re here, you’re in charge.” Then I flicked a look at Dante and huffed a breath. “Are you coming, or are you going to laugh your head off while sitting here on your ass?”
He stood up slowly, like he didn’t have a worry in the world, and sauntered toward me. I was ready to explode and teach him the lesson Hiroshi had never gotten around to, except that would only delay our departure.
“Are you going to keep standing there like a statue, glaring at me?” Dante remarked casually. “Or are we rushing to the rescue?”
I inhaled a deep breath and released it, gripping hold of my last ounce of patience.
“Maybe I’ll put you in the cell with Phoenix,” I suggested casually. “I have a sneaking suspicion she’d beat your ass to a pulp.”
That shut him up for the duration of our trip to Saint-Tropez.
