I just rolled my eyes, not dignifying them with a response.
Phoenix’s eyes met mine. “You okay?”
I smiled. “Yes, more than okay.”
She left it at that, but I knew she was worried about Amon breaking my heart. I knew he wouldn’t though. If anything, he was responsible for making my heart happier each day.
“Where are Amon and Dante?” Athena asked as she reached for a large baguette and filled it with ham before even sitting herself down at the table.
“They had a call to handle,” I told them.
Raven rolled her eyes but said nothing.
We all sat ourselves around the table on the back deck. There were a couple of large baguettes, salami, cheeses, and a large Niçoise salad with green beans, boiled eggs, olives, and tuna over luscious green leaves.
The girls eyed it suspiciously. None of us liked green beans.
The chef must have noticed us staying away from it because he pointed at the large bowl. “This is healthy.”
All of our noses scrunched. “That’s the first thing wrong with it,” Athena noted, reaching for the salami.
“Don’t girls eat healthy?” another crew member questioned, looking at us and smiling.
“That would be a hard pass,” Raven told him. “You eat healthy and see how full you are. Give me salami and prosciutto any day.”
The chef looked so taken aback that we all burst out laughing, making him grin ruefully.
I poured us sparkling San Pellegrino.
“Make sure you drink water,” I said, tucking a stray hair behind my ear, then continued speaking and signing. “You’ve been in the water for a long time.”
“Oh, oh, oh,” Isla said, signing at the same time for Phoenix. “There is mother Reina, coming to whip us into shape.”
“When she starts cleaning, trouble lurks,” Raven pointed out. “Let her mother us with fluids all day long, as long as there’s no cleaning involved.”
A round of snickers followed.
“Leave her alone,” Phoenix ordered, narrowing her eyes on them in feigned fury. “Or you’ll have to answer to her big sister.”
I chewed my piece of salami before reaching for more. The chef and the crew disappeared, leaving us alone. No sooner had the last one disappeared from earshot than the interrogation began.
“How is the sex with your hot boyfriend?” Athena asked, grinning like a fool.
“Is he making you scream?” Isla fanned herself. “’Cause, mamma, that boy is hot. I’m more into older men, but that one… Not bad, Reina. Not bad.”
I rolled my eyes, but my cheeks burned hot and it had nothing to do with the heat of the sun.
“Has he asked for your virginal ass?” Of course only Raven would ask that.
“There’s such a thing as too much information,” Phoenix cut in. “Now, Reina, there is only one question that needs answering.” My shoulders slumped at their constant teasing. My sister could be as ruthless as Raven, so I prepared for the worst. “Are you being safe?”
I released the breath I’d been holding.
“Yes.” That one was easy to answer, especially considering we hadn’t had sex yet.
“Good, that’s all that matters,” my big sister answered. “And if he breaks your heart…” Phoenix cleared her throat as if choking up.
“We’ll kill him,” Isla finished for her, very satisfied with her threat.
