Closure
Two Weeks Later
Aaron called me yesterday to let me know Mason officially filed to contest the will.
His lawyer contacted Aaron, who wanted to bring me up to speed.
Mason stated he felt I had manipulated his sick grandmother into giving me the property.
I didn’t have to waste my time explaining to Aaron how that wasn’t true.
Granny Tab told him that Mason would be the one to contest the will.
She prepared Aaron for Mason’s behavior.
Aaron let me know there was nothing for me to do at the moment. If anything changed, he’d let me know.
I woke up in Jacob’s bed this morning, unable to sleep last night.
Mason was like an itch I couldn’t scratch.
Whenever I thought I was done with him, he continued to reappear.
I prayed this was the last hurdle I would have to experience with him.
If he wanted the house, he could have it.
I didn’t need the added stress in my life.
When Aaron called back, depending on what he said, I prepared myself to tell him just that.
Jacob got out of bed twenty minutes ago.
I went into the bathroom to take care of my hygiene before heading downstairs.
When I reached the dining room, the sight of Jacob and Jada having breakfast together made me smile.
Jada was talking Jacob’s ear off about nothing in particular, but when she saw me, the conversation stopped.
“Good morning, Miss Faith,” Jada greeted me.
“Good morning, cutie. How’s your breakfast?” I asked.
“Yummy in my tummy,” Jada answered as she rubbed her belly.
Jacob and I laughed at her antics. Jada kept us on our toes.
I kissed Jacob on his cheek before I walked into the kitchen to get some coffee.
My mornings looked much different from what I could have ever imagined.
The more time I spent at Jacob’s place, the more I didn’t want to leave.
I even went with Jacob to drop Jada off at summer camp some mornings.
We had a little routine that made me never want to go back to my empty apartment.
I took my coffee and went into the room that Jacob had turned into an office for me.
He went to drop Jada off at camp while I had a call with Trigga and his manager.
Trigga had some upcoming engagements that he needed my assistance with.
The call went well, and I took notes of the ideas Trigga had for me.
He was into his style, so there was a lot of input.
I appreciated it because working with a blank canvas could be challenging.
By the end of the call, I provided Trigga with a timeline for us to meet for his fittings.
Just as I was wrapping up the call, my other line beeped. It was Aaron calling.
“Good morning, Faith,” Aaron greeted me.
“Good morning. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you so soon,” I stated.
“I’m just as shocked as you. I reached out to Mason’s attorney early this morning. He would like us to meet today to see if we can come to an agreement. I know it’s a last-minute request, but can you be at my office at three this afternoon?” he asked.
“If you think we can settle this, sure. I’ll be there,” I replied.
I hung up with Aaron and then went to look for Jacob. He was in the walk-in closet.
“Hey, love. You came to get a quickie during work,” he joked.
“No, silly. The estate attorney called me. Mason wants to meet with me at three o'clock to discuss the house. Are you free to come with me?” I asked.
“Yeah. Let me make some calls and make sure they don’t need me on set,” he stated.
I kissed him before heading back down to the office. Before we left, I had a few more calls to tend to.
At three in the afternoon, Jacob and I were seated in the conference room of Aaron’s office.
Mason and his attorney sat on the opposite side of the desk.
The scene felt all too familiar. Memories of Mason’s last outburst in this room flooded my mind.
With Jacob by my side, I wasn’t concerned about Mason having another childish tantrum.
Mason didn’t even look my way this time around.
With everyone seated, Aaron introduced everyone then got to business.
“Mr. Baxter, would you like to discuss your concerns regarding the validity of the will?” Aaron offered.
“I called this meeting because I’ll be dropping my complaint. I’ve come to terms that my grandmother’s will was her dying wish,” Mason announced.
I was visibly confused, but no one interrupted him.
“Faith, I owe you an apology. My grandmother left me a video that happened to arrive this morning. She cussed me out from here to the end of the earth for how I’ve treated you.
I hate to admit that she may have loved you more than me.
You deserved a better husband than I was to you.
I had no idea how much you did for my grandmother in the midst of our struggles.
As my grandmother said, you can make the house a home.
You deserve it and so much more. I’m sorry,” he apologized.
I took a moment to process his words while everyone in the room stared in my direction.
“I wasn’t expecting any of that. Why the sudden change of heart? It’s been years of your belittling and disrespecting me. I’m just shocked,” I admitted.
“In the video that Grandmother Tabby left me, she told me things about her marriage to my grandfather, things I didn’t know she endured as his wife.
My treatment of you was similar to what she endured with my grandfather.
I want to break that spirit of hatred toward women in my family.
I took vows to love and cherish you, but when it mattered most, I failed you.
My grandfather also had children outside his marriage,” he explained.
“That sounds familiar,” I interjected.
“Very familiar. Something clicked when she shared this with me. This is my attempt to be better than the man I looked up to. She also mentioned in her video that she actually left me half a million dollars. It’s only a fraction of the value of the house, but I’ll take it.
I truly hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me,” Mason voiced.
“I forgave you a long time ago. For my peace of mind, hating you would have only slowed my healing process. Thank you for dropping the complaint,” I asserted.
I stood up to leave the office, and Jacob followed me out. A slight chuckle escaped my lips. If Granny Tab hadn’t given him that money, he wouldn’t have dropped anything. I could only wish to have the wisdom Granny Tab did one day. She knew her family so well and was a true matriarch.
Jacob and I got on the elevator.
“All good?” he asked now that we were all alone.
“All good, baby. Thank you for being here for me,” I expressed.
“Always, love.”
