Page 122 of All That Glitters
When we get back, there are a couple of customers waiting, so I walk Legs upstairs and head back down to help Powers. It takes us both an hour to deal with everyone, and by the time they’re done, I’m itching to get back upstairs to Legs. Having her out of my sight makes my palms itch. Even though I know she’ll stay until the threat of danger is over, I can’t help but feel like something or someone is going to come along and snatch her away.
“Jesus, it feels like everyone is trying to pawn their shit right now,” Powers complains, cracking his neck.
I toss him a Coke from the drinks fridge and take one for myself before answering. “Times are hard. People do what they have to, to survive.”
Powers nods before taking a large sip of his drink.
“Anyone come in asking for Legs?”
“Today, no. But I’ve had a few people ask me before. I never mentioned it because you never asked me about it.”
“No, people used to ask all the time. She was always better with customers than I was. Probably because she likes people more than I do.”
He grins. “Probably.”
“She also has more patience than me. It just occurred to me, though, that this asshole might have come in asking after her.”
His face turns serious. “You keep the security footage from the cameras?”
“For around six months or so yeah.”
“I can go through it.”
“There’s no sound. You wouldn’t know who was asking for her, but it might not hurt to take a look. That’s gonna be a shit job though.”
He points to his prospect patch. “It comes with the gig, right? Besides, it’s better than cleaning toilets. Is there any way you can get G to send it to my iPad? That way, I can watch the footage on the shop floor when it’s quiet.”
“Leave it with me, and I’ll see what I can do.”
He nods and finishes his Coke, crushing the can in his hand.
“Go take a break and get something to eat. I’ll watch the shop. I’m gonna need you to ride back over to the clubhouse later with Amity, Lil, and Nevaeh.”
“No problem, Midas.” He tosses his empty can in the trash before heading out. I drop down in one of the chairs and guzzle down the rest of my drink. When the door opens, the women walk in.
“Hey, Midas.” Lil greets me first, walking over with a smile on her face.
“Hey, Lil. How you doing?”
“Good. It’s nice to have a day off, though. I won’t lie.”
“You know volunteering is noble and shit, but you’re no good to anyone if you burn yourself out.”
“I know.” She sighs. “It also doesn’t pay the bills, so I’m going to drop down my hours. I just wanted to help get them set up and running.”
I give her a quick hug, letting her know I understand, before she strolls past me and Amity steps up.
“Legs okay?”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Amity look nervous before. The woman dangled off a cliff with a broken arm and still managed to look calm and put together.
“She’s fine. I took her shopping this morning because all her shit got ruined, so she might get tired?—”
“What do you mean her shit got ruined?” Nevaeh frowns from behind her.
“How about I let Legs fill in the blanks for you both? Go on up. Tell Legs I’ll be up soon.”
“You got it,” Amity says, walking ahead.
