“Thank you,” she said. “But you’re not bad yourself.”
Her hand reached around his body and landed on his ass in his athletic shorts that he’d thrown on when he got out of bed, his broad chest still bare. She had a tank top and underwear on.
“Not bad for an old man,” he said, laughing.
“At least you joke about it now.”
“There is no reason not to. Our age is only a number.”
Harmony turned in his arms. “It is. I’m more interested in what is in your heart.”
She put her left hand on his chest, over his heart.
“What a magnificent picture that would be,” he said. “Funny how you did that without knowing.”
“Knowing what?”
He took her hand in his, then reached into his pocket and came out with a ring.
A diamond ring.
There was an oval diamond in the center, a large one, with three tiny flowers on each side of the band. The same flowers that matched her bracelet and earrings that she’d gotten for her birthday. A harmony of flowers.
She knew right away her sister-in-law made this ring.
“Have I shocked you?”
Her head was rapidly bobbing up and down. “Yes. Daisy made this. How?”
“She did it before the baby came. It’s been hard to keep it a secret.”
She swallowed a lump in her throat. She was already excited and just waiting for him to put it on her finger.
“Are you going to ask me?”
“I am,” he said, getting down on one knee. “Harmony. You’ve done for me what you have for so many others whose names you’ll never know. You’ve brought joy and happiness into my life. I don’t want to live another day without knowing you’ll be mine. That you’ll be at home with me every night and we can make our life together. I love you. I love everything you stand for and bring into this world. What you’ve brought into mine. Will you marry me?”
She was almost choking on her tears. “Micah,” she said, sobbing. “Those are the most beautiful words ever. Yes, I’ll be your wife.”
He slid the ring on her finger. It was a perfect fit, but she hadn’t expected any different.
“Get your phone out and take a picture to post.”
“What? You don’t want to be on my social media.” She wasn’t sure she wanted him there. At least not yet.
“Not me.” He put her hand on his heart again. “Take this picture, right here. It’s your life and I’m part of it. It’s time you start thinking of blending the two the way you know best.”
That statement was better than the engagement in her eyes.
He trusted her to not fail either of them.
“With your naked chest and all?” she asked. “Woohoo. Everyone is going to be so jealous.”
He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t think of that. I’ll get a shirt.”
She was going to tell him no, but didn’t. “First, let’s take one just to send Scarlet.” Who was staying with her mother while the two of them were here. She snapped the picture, then sent it fast. “Let me pick your shirt.” She ran to his suitcase and found a fitted T-shirt. Might as well make everyone jealous.
She threw the shirt at him and he slipped it on, then they went back on the balcony where the sun was still rising.
Her phone went off fast. She could almost hear the screaming in her future stepdaughter’s text, then showed it to Micah.
“She knew, don’t let her kid you,” he said, laughing. “I’m surprised she didn’t give it away.”
“Awwww, I’m so glad you told her first. She’s your world and now she’ll be mine.”
He gave her a quick kiss on the lips, then grabbed her phone and held it over his head, snapped the picture of her hand on his chest, then she took a few too.
Once she found the perfect shot, she framed it and added hearts, then posted it with the caption:My heart found its home!
The End!
