We watch as the girls drive through the gate before going back inside to sit. “How are you and Fiona?” I ask Raul.

“Uh. Good,” he says, and I raise an eyebrow at him. “It’s nothing bad, we just agree that we are great friends, but we aren’t romantically connected. We will be fine, but I know eventually she will want that connection with someone.”

“Eh. Something to address later,” I say. “So where are we at with Alania’s biological family?”

“Well,” Raul says. “She is part of the O’Mally family. It’s a massive family, so I am trying to find out who exactly she belongs to. They have a habit of hiding under false names, so it’s taking some time.”

“Well, let’s start at the bottom and work our way to the main ones running it. They’ve been pretty quiet. All of them.”

We all end up on our laptops researching. It’s hard to find the child of a ghost when we don’t actually know how old Alania truly is or when she was taken. Families like this don’t report their child missing to the police; they start a war.

About an hour later, Julio, my head of security, comes busting into the house. “What is your…” I start to say.

“There was a shooting!” Julio nearly shouts.

“What?” I snap as I toss my laptop down beside me and jump up with the others.

“There was a shooting. Reggie followed them. He lost them for a second but… It’s the girls…”

“Fuck!” I hiss. “Let’s go.”
