Story: The Vampire's Seduction
Find it. Must follow scent.
If he left, would he ever find the source of the scent?
Wait.Marek handed Sascha his burden.Take him.
With wide eyes, Sascha caught the body.
Where are you going?Rowan asked, already one foot out the door. Two others from their team rushed past and out into the night.
I need to check on something. Go ahead without me. I’ll meet you guys at the rendezvous point.
You can’t leave. It’s too dangerous.
The cops will be here in five minutes,Sascha pointed out.
I’ll be fine. Now go.Marek glowered at them until they left. Then he followed the scent trail to the left wing. The glass doors were locked. Since the alarms already went off, he didn’t need to be quiet and hack the lock. Instead, he grabbed the gun from the nearest Hunter’s body and fired at the door.
The glass shattered. Shards rained down to the ground. Marek put on a burst of speed, driven by an instinct as old as time.
Something about the scent seemed familiar.
Like he already knew it.
He didn’t have to go far down the hall, for the smell emanated from the third door. He turned the handle.
Locked.
Damn it!
He jiggled the handle more out of frustration. The scent was so close he could almost touch it.
He needed to know where it came from.
Crack. The handle broke.
“Fuck!” He punched the door. Other than the pain that reverberated over his knuckles and up his arm, nothing changed. In the distance, the sirens wailed.
He was running out of time.
His eyes caught the flash of reflection from the large window looking into the room. Lifting the gun, he peppered the windows with bullets. They were more resistant than the doors. The first few bullets only made cracks, but Marek unloaded the full clip into it.
More cracks spider-webbed from the bullet holes. Too slow. Using all his strength, he threw his fist into it.
Again. Again. Like a man possessed. He might as well have been because he would have done anything to get into that room.
Break. Damn you! Break!
Five quick but furious punches later, the window finally gave way, its center shattering. Marek impatiently kicked the sharp edges until there was a big enough hole to climb inside. The edges nicked the skin on his arms and legs, tiny cuts that healed immediately.
He was inside a laboratory with stainless steel fridges and machines that hummed loudly. The scent was everywhere, overpowering the ammonia and other smells, and made Marek dizzy.
His ears strained, but he heard nothing. No heartbeats.
No breathing to indicate anyone was inside.
The scent originated from here. He was certain of it, but where? What was the source?
Marek stalked around, examining each table and opening the fridges and drawers and cabinets.
