“Nothing right now,” Sataria smiled. “I am about to leave for the evening.”
“Next time you come, you be sure to see me, Ms. Pearson, I’ll take good care of you.”
“That’s good to know,” she said as Marvin extended his hand toward the exit. When they got there, Marvin gave the same instructions to his front door security.
“This is Sataria Pearson. She is my personal guest.”
“You got it, Money.”
After that, Marvin escorted Sataria to her car, said good night to her, and then headed for The Late Night. As he got closer, he could see the search lights. When he rounded the corner, he saw the long line outside waiting to get in. There was a red carpet leading to the club where the invited guests would enter the new spot to the envy of those who had to wait in line.
“There he is,” Latavius said from the car that he and Psych were waiting in.
“Showtime,” Psych said and started the car. He watched as Marvin drove his Traverse into the line of cars.
“He’s next,” Latavius said.
“Let’s do this!” he shouted, dropped the car in gear and slow rolled toward their unsuspecting target.
When it was his turn to get out to walk the red carpet, Psych picked up speed, Latavius took aim and opened fire on Marvin and the crowd. At the sound of gun fire, Marvin dropped to the ground as bullets flew. The shooting didn’t last long.
Once the car had driven by, scared guests got to their feet and were glad to be alive. But that was when a second car drove by The Late Night and opened fire again and once again, people dove for the ground.
This time when the shooting stopped, Marvin bounced to his feet and ran after the car firing until it was out of sight. Fortunately, nobody was killed, but several civilians had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The Kings had to strike back.
Chapter Six
If you wanted to make a statement, running a drive-by at the grand reopening of The Late Night was definitely the way to do it. It was RJ’s big night, so Bobby and Pam, as well as his sisters, Barbara and Tenikka were in the house. As were Black and Shy, Nick and April, Wanda and Rain … on the list of family members in attendance was endless, but needless to say, it was a Family event, so everybody was there.
Even Jackie and Travis were there with Fiona.
“Your ass better have a good fuckin’ explanation about where the fuck y’all niggas been,” Rain said.
“I’ll explain everything after this is done,” Jackie promised, and Rain told her to meet her at J.R.’s once it was over, but the drive-by changed that plan.
Now that the festive tone of the evening was lost, most of The Family left The Late Night before the police got there. When Black looked at Chuck, he stood up.
“You need to come with me, Mrs. Black,” he said and extended his hand to help her up.
Without argument or discussion, Shy accepted his hand and got up. She leaned forward and kissed her husband.
“Be safe and come home to me.”
“I will.”
“I love you,” she said and left The Late Night with Chuck. It was no different for the Ray’s. At the first sign of trouble, Treshaun was on his feet and hurrying Pam, Barbara and Tenikka out the back to exit right behind Chuck and Shy. April doted and fussed over her son until Nick literally had to drag her away to cries of assurance from Marvin.
“I’m fine, Ma, really. I’m fine,” Marvin said, “Now please, go with Pop.”
But there were four people that did not leave The Late Night before the police got there and that was Mike Black, Bobby Ray, Wanda Moore and Rain Robinson.
“We need to talk,” Black said and stood up and the others followed his lead. He went in the back and started down a long hallway. When he did, Wanda knew where he was going.
“Did you tell him about it?” Wanda asked Bobby.
“No. I didn’t see the need. None of his expansion came this way,” Bobby said and continued down the hall that the three of them hadn’t been down in years.
