"No!" I shot back up on my feet. "No." And now Joanne was probably so curious about this that she'd start looking for answers. If I knew anything about Travis's sister, it was that she loved a mystery. "Can I trust you?"
"Of course."
"Like, genuinely, deeply trust you."
I'd hurt her feelings and I didn't care. "Yes, you can. We're practically family. If I betrayed you, HukandTravis would flay me alive."
It was like ripping out stitches, but it needed to be done. "I have a stalker. A stalker who has figured out that I'm not where he thought I was. I need to be sure that if he somehow traces me here, he can't get my name from your system."
The blood drained from her face. "Oh my god, Marley. I'm so sorry." She rushed back to her desk. "Here, take a look. Our computers are password protected." She quickly typed in hers because in the couple of minutes she'd been away from her desk it had locked. "Nothing is in the cloud. We have a backup server in the closet. Everything is here in this office. This is what your file looks like." She stepped aside so I could lean closer.
"I don't understand." The only name listed for the Golden Hour Lodge and the Golden Hour Bungalow was Jackson. It noted the payment was received in cash.
"Mack changed it weeks ago."
I kept staring because I didn't understand. "But...why?"
Joanne shrugged. "I don't know. Mack just said that since you were with Jackson now it didn't make sense to store your information like some regular guest. I thought it was weird at the time, but it made sense. Travis adores you. I figured Scottie must feel the same way."
Did that mean Mack knew who I was? Weeks ago? Karis only just found out. Who else knew? "Thanks Joanne."
"Yeah. Hey, we should probably get to know each other better if you're going to be with Huk. Do you maybe want to join us for girls’ night on Wednesday?"
The feeling that whooshed through me was strange and foreign. Because of my connections with the owners of the Tangerines, I'd gotten pulled into Charley's group of friends. It was easy because of our professional relationships. If we hadn't clicked, I would have simply stopped accepting the invites or they would have stopped issuing them. It had been a long time since I took a chance on a group of women I didn't particularly know. Add to that it would really suck if we didn't get along because I planned on being in Huk's life for...a while. "What happens at girls’ night?"
She shrugged. "This month? We're doing a potluck at Aviana's."
That seemed safe enough. "Uh, yeah. That would be nice."
"Cool." She shoved her hands in her back pockets and rocked on her feet. "Bring a dish or a drink, we meet at six. Aviana lives in the first house on the right, past the saloon."
"Six. Just past the saloon. Got it. Thank you, Joanne. I really appreciate everything you both have done for me."
She smiled brightly. "We enjoy having you and Huk around."
I jumped back in my truck, but I didn't point it towards home. I needed to know who knew what. My first stop was the saloon.
Scottie smiled at me from the bourbon bar. "Hey Marley. What brings you in?"
His smile was genuine and everything I knew about Scottie indicated he wasn't someone who bullshitted around. He was always nice to me and the conversations we had were easy. I felt more than comfortable around him. Around all of Jackson's friends.
But this was a delicate conversation, so I glanced around the bar. It was mostly empty except Big Al was in his usual spot, along with a couple other regulars.
"Is there somewhere private we can talk?"
"Is Huk okay?"
"It's about me."
His lips thinned and he held up a finger. He let the other bartender know he'd be gone for a bit and escorted me to an office in the back. As soon as the door was closed, he held up his hands. "Huk hasn't said a word."
Scottie knew. Mack knew. How? And why didn't they tell me? "Who told you?"
"Hukdoesknow, right? He went with you this weekend so I figured he must."
I ran my hand over my forehead as my world tilted and spun in different directions like a sadistic carnival ride. "He knows. How doyou?"
"Mack figured it out. We haven't said a word because it's none of our business." He dipped his head to catch my gaze.
