Story: The Marriage Game

Wait. Why would you agree to be his campaign manager if you don’t want him to continue working in government? Explain yourself immediately.

Hannah

Did you change your mind?

Brooke

JILL!! Say something.

Hannah

Yeah! Don’t make me leave my children with my husband and come over there.

Hannah

Or do make me. I love my kids but waking up with a foot in my mouth isn’t even the grossest thing to happen to me in the last day. Yesterday Casey had an accident in one of our kitchen chairs and I didn’t notice until I sat down in it. That’s right, I sat in my son’s pee.

Brooke

Oh, Hannah.

Hannah

I know. And can you believe Luke laughed when I told him what happened! Laughed!

Brooke

I cannot believe that. I know I am certainly not laughing right now.

Hannah

Oh ha ha. So funny that Hannah sat in her son’s pee. You just wait, Brooke. Your day will come. I’ve seen the way Benson runs streaking out of the bathroom after a bath. One day he’s going to pee somewhere unbeknownst to you or Will and oh boy…you’d better tread carefully.

Brooke

I feel like we’ve gone off topic. Focus, Hannah. Jill, speak. Or type, I guess, as the case may be.

Hannah

Right. Sorry. Enough about urine. Why are you managing Max’s campaign? Do you want him to run?

I look again at Max’s sleeping form and my gut twists. He’s been a state senator for 7-and-a-half years. On top of that he’s continued to take on cases at his family’s law firm. The demands on his schedule are great and though he tries to prioritize our family, every year that goes by it seems to become increasingly harder for him to do so. I can’t remember the last volleyball game of Elle’s he came to. And sure, he made it to Liam’s last track meet, but that was more by happenstance than by design. The meet was located right by his office. Before that he hadn’t been to a single one the whole season.

He came to Elle’s spring choir concert, but he got called away halfway through. He didn’t even get to hear her solo. Does heknow Liam made it into the school spelling bee that’s in two weeks? It happened while he was traveling and though I put it in our shared calendar, I’m not sure he even checks that much anymore.

Our kids are growing up. And he’s missing it.

Worse, I miss him…even though he’s sleeping right next to me.

So has my opinion changed on Max running…

Jill

No. I don't want him to run for attorney general.

Brooke

So why is he then? And why are you managing his campaign?
