Story: Taming of a Rebel
“I wanted to.” Siena wrapped her in a huge hug, tightening her grip. “Something in your voice said you needed me.”
“Mom!” Harley stampeded through the living room and weaseled her way in between them.
Tori stepped back and let them have their time. It was good they were still friends. It meant that Harley got to see each of them more often than other kids did. Even if it was hard. Tori blew out a breath. She couldn’t tell Siena what happened because she would get the I told you so lecture of a lifetime, and then a scolding for letting Miranda be around Harley before they all had a chance to discuss.
“So? Drinks or just dinner?” Siena set Harley down.
“Definitely drinks.” But Tori wasn’t going to be stupid. She’d avoid tequila, and she’d only have one. She didn’t need to make that mistake twice. Or was it three times, if she included her buzzed night of sex with Miranda? Tori sighed as she stepped into the kitchen to get everything going.
Siena played with Harley for a bit while Tori started dinner. When Harley finally had enough of being entertained, she snagged Siena’s phone and went to her room to watch some videos. Siena touched her hand to Tori’s back as she stepped next to the counter.
“Spill the beans.”
“What beans?” Tori’s back was up. She was awful at lying, but even worse at hiding things, especially from Siena. This was going to take some very careful maneuvering.
“What’s got you so upset?” Siena stole a chunk of chicken from the stir fry right off the skillet and popped it in her mouth.
“I’m not upset.”
Siena snorted. “Like hell you’re not. Is it that Miranda woman? I’ll beat her up for you.”
“What? No.”
“Oh my god, it is, isn’t it?” Siena’s eyes widened. “I was just teasing, but I’m right. What happened?”
“Nothing happened.” Tori frowned and pulled the food off the stove top, plating it. “Crushes suck. Okay? Nothing’s going to happen. I promise.” Not with the conversation they’d had earlier that day. “But I have this crush on her, and she doesn’t reciprocate.”
“So now she’s your new best friend?” Siena raised an eyebrow. “What have I told you about being friends with everyone?”
“Well, it seems to have worked well with you and Aili.” Tori felt like a child pouting to make her point.
“Touché.” Siena chuckled. “So you have a crush on your new friend. That’s not all that odd, you know. I think most people crush on their friends at some point, even if they’re not sexually attracted to that gender or sex. It’s normal to really like the people you’re friends with.”
“Really?” Tori gave her a dubious look. It all seemed too easy.
“Yeah. How do you think we ended up dating?” Siena hip-checked her, bringing the plates to the table so they could eat. “Harley! Dinner is ready!”
Dinner was easy conversation, the silent understanding clear that they wouldn’t talk about current romantic relationships in front of Harley. Siena tucked Harley into bed, and when she came back out, she flopped on the couch next to Tori with a heavy sigh.
“You’re not the only one who’s having girl problems.”
“I’m not?” Tori settled her hand on Siena’s thigh.
Groaning, Siena flopped her head back on the couch. “Haylee and I got back together again. Briefly. Like for a couple nights.”
“To have sex.” Tori laughed. “You make a bad habit of that, don’t you?”
“Shut up.” Siena knocked their shoulders together. “You do, too.”
“Oh, no, I don’t.” She’d only ever gone back to one woman, and that was Siena. “So you two had sex again, and then broke up again.”
“Yeah. Double breakups are rough.” Siena was smiling though. “I still think you two would make a much better couple than her and me.”
“You just told me you had sex with her and now you want me to have sex with her?” Tori frowned. “That’s just weird.”
“It’s really not.”
“It really is.” Tori relaxed. “I’ll think about it. Will that make you happy?”
