Story: Hello Heartbreaker
She put her hands on my face. “I took a pregnancy test in the store, and it came back positive.”
My mouth opened and closed. This couldn’t be real. “How did you pay for it after you took it?”
“Mags!” she cried. “I’m pregnant!”
And it hit me. All of it hit me. “Holy shit, you’re having a baby?”
She nodded, her blue eyes wide, blond hair moving.
“Is it Cooper’s?” I had to ask.
She nodded again. “He’s the only guy I’ve been with since we moved home.”
“How?” I shook my head. “I mean, I knowhow, but I thought you were on the shot?”
“I was a little late taking it,” she admitted. “But I didn’t think a week would make a difference, and things with Cooper were so intense I didn’t think to ask him to wear a condom or take something the next day.” She covered her face, giving herself tunnel vision and breathing deeply.
The backs of my legs butted up to the stall door as I rubbed her shoulders. “It happens. Birth control’s never a hundred percent.”
“I’m thirty-two years old. I’ve been so careful.” Tears began sliding down her cheeks. “I mean, I’ve had scares, but never actually been... pregnant...”
I hugged her tight, rubbing her back. “What do you want to do? I can call a cab to drive us home. I don’t care how much it costs.”
She held on to me and spoke into my shoulder. “I’m so scared. And I know this sounds crazy but I’m... also kind of... happy about it too.”
“You are?” I pulled back, taking her in.
She nodded, wiping her eyes. “I’ve always wanted to be a mom, and you know how it is when you get to be in your thirties. You feel your clock ticking. Now I don’t have to wait anymore.”
I definitely understood that part. “But Cooper? Are you sure about raising a child with him?”
She smiled slightly. “You know how they say when you know, you know? I felt it. With him.”
My lips parted. “You did?”
She nodded. “Dirty toilet and all. He’s my person. Who knows? My grandparents only knew each other a week before getting married, and they were together over fifty years. Maybe insta-love is in my blood.”
I wiped at her tears with my thumbs. “If you’re happy, I’m happy.” Even if I was also nervous for her too. A child was a life-changing responsibility.
She grinned, nodding. “I’m happy.”
My heart soaring for her, I yelled in the bathroom, “I’m going to be an aunt!”
Women in the stalls around us cheered, and Cam laughed happily. “Now I just need to tell Cooper.”
I nodded. “Do you need me to do it with you?”
She shook her head. “It’s him and me now.”
She opened the stall, smiling bashfully at the people around us, and walked out of the bathroom. As I stepped behind her, I couldn’t help but feel like she was moving forward. And I tried to remember that didn’t mean I was getting left behind.

I walkedinto the crowded bar, looking around for my person. He was over six feet tall, so it usually wasn’t hard to spot him and his sandy-blond hair in a crowd. Except now I was extra aware of what I carried with me.
I knew I wouldn’t be able to feel the baby for weeks to come, but I sensed its presence as I looked for Cooper. I found him near Rhett, still waiting in line at the bar. When I found him, I slipped my hand through his and said, “Come with me?”
