Story: Gather the Storm

Then he shoved it over my nose and mouth. It was damp, and I inhaled a strange slightly sweet scent.

I fought as the edges of my vision darkened, my head buzzing, but I wasn’t strong enough. Calvin’s grip was like iron, his hand clamped firmly over the cloth covering my mouth and nose.

I felt the pull of unconsciousness, fought it for a second.

Then I had no choice. Everything went black.

Chapter 69

Wolf

Ihad the pedal to the metal all the way through town, oblivious to the possibility of getting pulled over for speeding.

All that mattered was getting to Daisy, telling her that Calvin —and therefore probably Daisy’s dad — had sent her the broken vase, had told her to stop digging into Blake’s murder.

“She’s stopped at Old Mountain Road,” Jace said, following her progress on the tracking app we’d installed on her new phone.

“She must be going home,” I said, allowing myself a moment of relief.

“No,” Jace said. “She’sstoppedthere.”

Fuck. “Okay, let’s think about this. We’re talking about Daisy’s dad here. Do we really think he’d hurt her?”

“Charles Hammond?” Jace asked. “Yeah, I think he’d fucking hurt her. He doesn’t give two shits about her and we know he was in on the whole thing with Blake.”

“We don’t know that.” I was trying to make myself feel better but it wasn’t quite working.

“We do,” Jace said. “You just don’t want to believe it because you’re fucking in love with her and scared shitless right now.”

“Try her again,” I said, because I didnothave the mental bandwidth to touch that right now.

Jace dialed her again, but it just rang before going to voice mail.

Again.

“Hurry the fuck up,” Jace said.

I didn’t bother pointing out that I wasn’t the only one who had feelings for Daisy judging from the fear in his voice. I’d save that for another time, after we knew she was safe.

We hit Old Mountain Road and I pushed Benji to the limit, barreling down the road leading to the house’s private drive.

The turnoff came into view, but I didn’t have time to feel relieved: the Mustang was there, parked at the side of the road, the driver’s side door wide open.

I screeched to a stop in the middle of the road and Jace and I got out at the same time both of us rushing to the car.

But I knew right away we were fucked because the engine was running, like Daisy had been yanked from the car before she’d even had time to cut the engine.

“Fuck fuck fuck,” Jace said, lacing his hands behind his head. He turned around and walked away from the car, like that would make the whole thing go away.

I spotted Daisy’s bag in the passenger seat and reached over the front seat to grab it.

“Okay,” Jace said, looking at his phone, “we’ll just find her. We have the tracking app.”

I pulled her phone out of her bag and held it up. Daisy didn’t have her phone.

“Fuck!” Jace screamed at the sky.

I didn’t blame him. This was bad. The running engine and open door meant whoever had taken Daisy hadn’t just invited her for a casual convo. She’d been forced out of the car.

Taken.

My heart was in my throat, my stomach twisted in knots. Someone had my girl.

Ourgirl, whether Jace realized it or not.

And we were going to tear the world apart to find her.
