Romi winced. “Thanks, but for now, I think I’m good. I’m happy being

single.” And apparently happy to hold out hope against the hopeless. She

didn’t want to tell her brother that whoever she went out with didn’t stand a

chance, at least not at the moment, because they weren’t Kiera. That was

sad. But it was also true. So what if I’m pathetic? At least I can admit it.

“Well, okay, but if you’re not happy, let me and Amy know. Hang out

with you friends. Try some new hobbies.”

“I am happy,” Romi insisted. “Really. Maybe I’ll be ready to start dating

again in a few months, but right now, I’m good. I think that everyone

should learn how to make themselves happy and be by themselves.”

“You always knew how to make yourself happy.”

That actually was kind of true. Romi just nodded and watched while Jack

loaded soap into the dishwasher and closed it back up. He fiddled with the

dials and it started up a few seconds later.

“I’m going to make myself another drink. Mom and dad have the best

slush machine. Our blender at home just doesn’t compare. You want one?”

Even though she didn’t normally like sweet alcoholic drinks and slushies

gave her a brain freeze and hurt her teeth, Romi nodded. Talking about

drinks was better than talking about her love life.

Or the lack of it. It would remain lacking for the foreseeable future. She

was perfectly happy, like she said, being single.
