married. They had a small, intimate ceremony in Romi’s parents’ backyard
with all their close family and friends. It wasn’t a hard decision to let
Romi’s family welcome her as another daughter. Kiera’s parents surprised
her and welcomed Romi with equal enthusiasm.
It wasn’t a hard decision for them to start a family. They both wanted and
loved children, and while they knew that they both wanted to be parents, it
was a longer discussion as to how exactly they wanted to have a family.
After a few weeks of discussion and weighing all their options, they both
decided that adoption was best. The process was a long, exhausting, and
challenging one, but the day Sonya and Amelia came to live with them was
one of the best of their lives.
Sonya was twelve while her sister Amelia was ten. They were both
struggling in the system, and older children, especially sisters, didn’t often
get adopted together.
It had been six months since they officially became a family. It was
almost two years to the day that Kiera and Romi had made the decision to
be a couple, right after Kiera came out to her parents.
Even though it was early, Kiera stood in the kitchen making coffee and
whipping up a batch of waffles. She was surprised when she felt Romi
come up behind her and throw her arms around her waist. She hugged her
close and Kiera melted against her, savoring her sweet scent.
“You’re always up before me,” Romi whispered in Kiera’s ear. She
kissed her gently on her neck, just below her earlobe. “You’re always the
one who makes breakfast.”
“That’s alright. I’m a morning person.”
“I’m so excited to see Amelia’s play tonight.”
Romi had continued working at the store with Kiera. They made such a
good team, and Romi was such a natural with everyone that when Kiera
begged her to stay, Romi was happy to oblige. They were one of those rare
couples who could work together and live together and love every single
