Story: Deadly Rescue
She studies the text on it. “Plane tickets.”
“A month-long honeymoon in Europe. We’ll pick out an apartment there as well. Something that can serve as our second home base.”
Her eyes mist up. “You thought of everything.”
“I tried.”
She kisses me. Slowly, as her arms wrap around my neck. “I love you, Jameson. Husband. Lover. Lifesaver.”
When she pulls back, I dig into my pocket. “I almost forgot. Josef gave me this. He said it’s a present for us.”
She takes the envelope. When she opens it, she laughs. “That man.”
“Are you going to tell me?”
“He… he gave us a deed to the cabin where you found me.” She reads the note that’s enclosed, translating for me. “I’m so very happy for you both. And I give you this, a place for you to be close so we can make some new family memories. I’m very excited to be a grandfather. Of course, this is a wonderful place to base your European operations too.”
She squeezes the letter against her heart. “I’m overwhelmed.”
“He loves you.”
“And he loves you too, apparently.”
“I’m glad. I don’t want to end up in the holding cell in the basement.”
Her eyes shine as she wraps her fingers tighter in mine. “I know where he keeps the key.”
With a laugh I say, “That makes me feel so much better.”
This woman. She’s everything. So many things I didn’t know I was missing. I drop a kiss on the back of her knuckles. “We’re going to have a lot of fun.”
She grins. Wickedly. “Yes, we are.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
Gliding on an updraft, a red hawk circles lazily above the valley floor. I’m envious of its simple life. Once upon a time mine was like that.
“Hey, man. Up for company?”
I glance over my shoulder. Mako has a glass bottle of beer in his hand and his navy blue tie pulled loose beneath the collar of his dress shirt.
“Sure.”
He sits on the bench with me, stretches his legs out, and sighs. “Great wedding. You enjoying yourself?”
Me? Not so much. “I’m happy for them. They’ve been through a lot. It’s really great that they have worked things out.”
“Well, you should be proud that you drove them out of that gun fight and everyone lived. “
“It was hairy there for a few minutes. I’m glad it turned out like it did.”
“They’re great together. Simona’s so intense. Interesting how Scotch is the perfect balance to that. He makes her laugh all the time. And she adores him, of course.”
“They seem to be having a great day.”
“Hell of a party, but I couldn’t resist coming to check out this view.”
“This area is pretty spectacular. Going to be a nice place for them to live.”
