Story: Deadly Rescue
“Time for breakfast, sexy. Come down to the pub. Everyone’s here.”
My eyes are full of sleep. Every muscle is deliciously sore as I stretch beneath the sheet and heavy blanket. “What time is it?”
“Eight. Come on down.”
“Alright. I’ll be there as soon as I find my brain. You seem to have screwed it right out of me.”
He laughs. The sound is warm and toe curling. “Glad I could be of service. See you in a few.” He clicks the line off.
Damn. So much for snuggling in bed all morning.
But… breakfast does sound damn good. I’m starving.
I take a record-fast two-minute shower, toss my wet hair into a ponytail and put on the same clothes I had yesterday since I don’t have anything else.
I hit the steps at a run. When I land on the lobby level, I can see that everyone is already inside the pub.
Wow. Bunch of early risers.
I pop in the door.
And freeze. Everyone’s staring at me… with weird looks on their faces.
Scotch steps around Wolf and holds out a hand. “Come on in.”
My nerves fizzle in my belly. “Uh. What’s up?”
I’m sure my eyes nearly leave my face when Scotch drops to his knee on the scuffed wooden pub floor. He pulls my hand into his and kisses it gently.
“Oh. My. God.” I must be asleep. This is some kind of weird dream.
But it feels really real. Scotch’s face is shockingly serious as he looks up at me. Oh lord. This really is happening.
He opens his hand and in the center of his palm is a sparkling diamond ring. It’s incredible. Smooth and sleek with the fiery diamond embedded right into the band. I’m officially stunned.
“Simona Novotny, will you be my wife?”
The room is so quiet I’m sure everyone can hear my heart spasming inside of my chest. I will not faint. I will not faint.
My voice comes out as a squeak, “Me?”
He nods, “You. The one and only. My heart won’t stand for any other.”
“Oh, Scotch.” I touch his strong, handsome face with my fingertips. “Yes! Yes. I’ll be Mrs. Jameson Scott.”
The room explodes in cheers. We’re swarmed by yelling and clapping. If anyone else in the building was sleeping, they’ll be running for the fire escapes.
Before I can catch my breath, Scotch spins me in a circle as he presses his face into my neck. He’s laughing man tears against me and I swear he sounds like the happiest man in the world when he says, “Welcome to the crazy train.”
CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
Three Months Later
She has no idea where we’re going. This makes me feel highly accomplished. It’s hard to pull much off on her.
I turn onto route 417, then left onto a little gravel road.
“Okay, you’ve officially got me curious.”
