Story: Deadly Rescue
She sighs. I turn and stomp toward the nurses’ station.
A young nurse dressed in green scrubs smiles. “Ah, Mr. Novotny. Can I help you?”
“Yes, and actually, it’s Doctor. I’d like to get some details on my… wife’s blood tests.”
She grins and glances at my junk. “She’s got the results.” She pivots on her heels and swaggers off, disappearing into another patient’s room.
What the hell?
I storm back into Simona’s room, as I round the corner I’m muttering. “Well, that went really well—”
My feet freeze in their tracks. “Simona?”
The room is empty.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
I’m so mad I could spit nails through the side of a car. “How the hell did she get away from us?”
Andre eyes me as if this is all my fault.
Gritting my teeth, I say, “I didn’t do anything.”
“She obviously didn’t want to see you.”
“Look, I don’t know anything about what happened in there before I walked in. All I know is that I wanted her to tell me. She wouldn’t, so I asked the nurse to tell me.”
Andre raises a brow. “That’s doing something.”
I shake my head and press at the spot where I’m sure there is an icepick sticking out of my skull. “That’s nothing new. She knew I was going to be involved. I mean, Christ. I am a doctor.”
Sighing, Andre climbs into his rented car. “Maybe there was something she didn’t want you to know.”
I turn to a sudden block of ice.
He shuts the door and starts the engine as I stare at him going over a million possibilities. “I’m going to look for her. You might want to as well.” He puts the car in reverse and backs out.
“Fuck,” I growl and stomp toward the car Simona and I arrived in together. She did it again.
CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
The little cabin is exactly as I remember it. Tucked into the mountainside, draped in heavy green boughs and dollops of snow. Josef never put a real lock on the door, so I’m inside in a few seconds, even without my lock pick set.
The interior is dark and cold, and perfectly quiet. Just as I knew it would be. The perfect place to hole up as I try to hang on to the tiny remaining threads of my sanity.
This place always brought me peace. I just hope it can now. Because there’s a tornado of emotion inside of me and I don’t have a root cellar to hide in.
Moving to the fireplace, I use the supplies he always has on hand to start a roaring fire. The paper and tinder glow and crack. Fire spreads to the logs before long and the cabin begins to warm.
Red, yellow, and even blue flames dance as I lose myself in the mesmerizing sway of the colors.
Pregnant.
Me. Of all people. Now. Of all times. With Scotch, my rescuer, my coworker, my hopeless addiction.
But the crazy thing between us is just that. Crazy.
And I, Simona Novotny, an orphaned spy who lives life by the seat of her tactical pants, has NO idea how to be a mother.
