Story: Dead Rinker

Zach

What else do you need? Luna and I are headed to the store in a sec, so we can grab you anything you need.

Jessie

Say the word and it’s yours. I don’t fly until tomorrow.

Me

Jon, you’re probably closest, so makes sense. Zach, I’m good. I just ordered in for me, and Kate has a lifetime supply of those god-awful ginger biscuits, thanks to Jessie.

Jon

I’ll be there in an hour.

“Yeah. I think my schedule is free then.” Kate’s voice filters through to the kitchen.

“Who are you talking to?” As soon as I appear in the doorway, a guilty look crosses her face as she hits end on her work cell. And she thinksI’minsufferable? “Who was that?”

She shrugs. “Margo.”

“At…” I check my watch. “Half past nine in the evening you’re making work calls?”

She winces. “I didn’t realize the time, but I always call her after hours if there’s an important meeting coming up. I needed to deal with it now.”

“Why not tomorrow, or better yet, when you’re better?” I try not to sound like I’m barking orders, but I’m worried she’s not putting herself first.

She takes a sip of water. Good. “That would be too late. The meeting’s tomorrow.”

Notgood.

“You really think I’m going to allow you to work tomorrow when you’ve been this sick?”

She scoffs. “What are you going to do about it? Tie me up?” Her eyes flare at her own suggestion. “Wait, don’t answer that. But seriously, you live on the other side of the city. You can’t constantly keep me under watch.”

Walking around to her side of the bed, I tip my finger under her chin and look her straight in the eyes. “Wanna bet? I’m moving in.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN

JENSEN

Night after night on this couch is killing my back. It’s in pieces.

Trying to stretch out in the tiny space, I hit accept on my usual early morning call from Mom. I didn’t get a chance to break the news of me being an expectant dad before I raced back to Seattle, so they’re still in the dark. My plan is to tell them face to face and after the wedding. Hollie and Ed, her fiancé, really don’t need their day overshadowed by my bombshell.

“Bright and early as per,” I say, keeping my voice low so I don’t wake Kate. Yesterday was the first day without any sickness. Thank fuck. But she’s lost visible weight.

“T-minus two weeks until the big day!”

“That’s what you called to tell me at six in the morning?”

“No, I called you to tell you your dad and I are coming to town this weekend. We’re staying with Chloe’s parents and going to watch a show. Will you be around?”

“What day do you want to meet?”

“We were thinking on Friday, lunchtime.”

It might be a good time to tell them about my news… “Yeah, it should be fine.” The temptation to invite Kate to meet them opens my mouth, but I quickly clamp it shut. Mom, especially, is going to have so many questions about us, mainly if we’re together.
