Story: Dead Rinker

“Here to carry your things and take you out like I promised.” He indicates to the box he’s holding. “Put them on here.”

I don’t argue as I balance my bag and jacket on top.

Pulling me by the hand, he leads me toward the reception area where Felicity’s standing with Margo.

“I’m going to miss you so much. You know that?” Felicity throws her arms around my neck, her voice shaking.

“Babe. I’ll probably see you more when I’m on leave than at work.”

She smiles and then looks at Jensen, her grin turning mischievous. “Have a good afternoon.”

Hmmm…

With a final goodbye to Margo, we head into the elevator and down to the parking lot. My thoughts are overcome with emotion.

This is it. One door is closing and another opening, and I know from this moment on, my life will never look or feel the same way again.

As if he knows exactly where my brain is, Jensen leans his head down towards me as the elevator descends. “This moment right here is where you start calling the shots on your life. This is your time, Princess.”

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

KATE

Iexpected us to head straight home, so when Jensen takes a left turn and pulls up outside one of the most exclusive jewelers in the Seattle area, I turn to him, my jaw hanging open.

“What are we…doing?”

“Doing princess things.”

Butterflies dance around with excitement, but I narrow my eyes at him. “Jensen.”

He rolls his. “JJ.”

Thumbing over my shoulder. “Are we…going in there?”

“Sure are, Mrs. Jones.”

Outside in the freezing late January air, I stand gazing through the window of a store I’ve stopped to look at a time or two in the past.

Jensen wraps his arms around my waist from behind and places his hands on my huge stomach. Breathing into my swirling hair, I can sense his comforting cologne. “Whatever you want, it’s yours. This is from me to you. To my wife and the greatest momma to exist.”

He takes my hand and pulls me into Ruby’s. The entire place is decorated in soft red velvet. As I look through a couple of the display cabinets at the stunning necklaces, there isn’t a price tag in sight.

My family is wealthy, but besides the money I’ve earned as a lawyer, I’ve never seen a penny, and I likely never will.

Not that it matters to me.

“Are you serious right now?” I look at him.

He pins me with a glare. “Deadly, Princess. We have the store to ourselves for the next two hours.”

I turn back to the display cabinets as the jeweler, and I assume the owner, hovers around us.

“What sort of item are you looking for?” he asks, clearing his throat.

“Um, well…” I glance at the necklaces again. “I was wondering about a necklace.”

The owner nods and begins opening the cabinet.
