Story: Dead Rinker

This whole thing was the biggest mistake of my life.

I shoot out of bed and grab my dress from the floor. Snatching up my phone and purse, I turn to look at him, still naked. He wears an appreciative grin at the sight. “I’ll tell you what I did lie about.”

“What’s that, Princess?”

“One-night stands. Apparently, I do have them.” I wrap my dress around me and make for the door. “Starting from last night.”

“Kate!”

“Fuck off.”

Slamming his door, I storm down the hall into my bedroom and throw on some clothes.NowI know why I don’t unpack my suitcase. Brushing my teeth, I throw the final toiletries into my bag and zip it shut when the toothbrush joins.

“Kate.”

“No.”

“Where are you going?”

“Home.” I whip around to face him. His hands grip the door frame above his head, and I refuse to look at his abs or the deep protruding v leading from the athletic shorts he’s wearing. “Move out of my way.” My voice cracks on the final word.

“Just slow down.”

Panic rises in me. “Last night was a mistake.”

For the first time ever, I watch as Jensen’s face twists with hurt. “No. It wasn’t.”

“It was. We agreed to be civil, and that was it.”

His grin returns. “Oh, last night was far more than civil.”

Dragging my hands down my face, I regret everything we did. “Please just let me leave.”

“Kate?” Luna comes to stand next to Jensen in the doorway. “Is everything okay?” She looks between us both, concern etched across her pixie features.

“Yeah, it’s fine, babe.” I pick up my phone and scroll to the Uber app, booking a car to come pick me up ASAP. “I just overslept and realized my flight leaves earlier than I thought.”

“Oh.” She side-eyes Jensen, who’s dressed in very little. “Okay. I thought you had the same flight as us?”

Not anymore, I don’t.

“No. I changed it last minute so I can get back early to work on this case. It, um, it needs my full attention.”

Picking up my suitcase, I point to the doorway they’re both blocking. I just want to go home and work on forgetting this ever happened. Also, scour the internet for one of those red-light flashy thingies that wipe your memory, like inMen In Black.“I have to go.”

Luna steps to one side, but Jensen stays exactly where he is. He thinksI’mstubborn. “I can get you a seat on my flight in first class.”

I scoff but then straighten up, remembering we have an audience. “That will be too late, and besides…” I pull up the handle on my case for effect. “I already have a seat in first.”

With Luna halfway down the stairs and out of sight, I go to push past him, but he shoots his arm out across my body and braces it on the opposite frame. “Stay.”

“We all leave today anyway.”

“Don’t leave like this. Not after what we shared last night.”

“It was just a hate fuck, and it’s a shame you had to go and ruin it this morning. You don’t own me.”

His jaw ticks, but he drops his hand from the frame. “You’re right. I don’t.” I go to leave, but he grabs me by the arm. “But one day, I’ll make you mine.”
