Story: Brands
A rush of adrenaline pounds my heart in my ears as I smother his mouth in rapid kisses.
It takes us both a moment to realize Char and Dixon are watching us. Fire runs up my throat to my cheeks, and Blue lets me slide down his body.
“We’ll celebrate later,” he whispers, then turns to Dix. “I have a favor, if you have a few minutes?”
Dixon nods, his dark mustache twitching under his narrowed eyes. “Sure.” He gestures to his desk in the next room.
Blue tosses me a wink before he disappears.
Char’s palms flatten on the counter. “Okay, Lib. I’ll ask you the same question you asked me.” Her blue eyes peer into mine. “Are you happy?”
I have a hard time meeting her gaze because I’m laughing too hard. “More than I’ve ever been,” I say honestly.
“But what about his…reputation?” Char’s mouth purses.
I lean back over the granite top, threading my fingers together with a serious tone. “He’s never lied, Char. He made a trust, bought my farm, and put me as the sole beneficiary. Explain why a man would do that if he doesn’t want commitment?” My brows raise as I wait.
“Wow.” Her chin drops and she studies her hands.
When she raises her head, a broad smile spreads her cheeks. “I’m so excited—”
“You can’t be fucking serious?” Dixon’s deep voice carries through the oak doors.
“Oh shit. What’s that about?” Char glances behind her.
I move closer to her, looping my arm through hers. “If I had to guess, Blue just asked Dixon tomarry us.”
Chapter Thirty-one
Blue
Dixon’s always been aman of few words, but those certainly weren’t the ones I was expecting.
“Of course I’m serious. You know I’m not one to just fall for any ol’ girl. She’s fuckingspecial.” My finger jabs in emphasis towards his chest.
Dix’s mustache raises in the corner. “I just never thought I’d see the day.” Shaking his head, he gives a rueful laugh. “Yea, man. I’ll be happy to officiate. It’s an honor.”
He holds out his hand, but I pull him in for a fast hug.
“I’m just glad I don’t have to beat your ass,” he chuckles. “You had me worried.” He squints his amber eyes before turning and pulling down two glasses and a bottle of high end whiskey.
“I know. My only concern is when Clay finds out.” I take the shot and knock it back.
Damn, it’s smooth.
“If he knows you like I do, expect some anger.” He swallows his own drink with barely a twitch. “But I’ll be frank,it’s the best thing in the damn world to have someone.” He takes a deep breath, staring off into the distance.
He’s so right.
I love knowing the little things about Libby that only come with time.
How she likes her coffee. Where to touch her to draw out the longest moan. The way she loops her “S” when she’s doing her morning paperwork, and how it changes depending on how much sleep she’s had.
It’s crazy how many more of those tiny tidbits I want to learn.
All of them.
Dixon sits in his overstuffed leather chair, gesturing to the one opposite, then leans his elbow on his knees.
