As we rounded another corner, the passage opened up into a vast cavern.
Massive stone pillars stretched from floor to ceiling, covered in intricate carvings that seemed to glow faintly in the dim light.
At the center of the chamber stood a raised dais, upon which rested an ornate stone altar.
The air here felt different - charged with an ancient, palpable energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Sky slowed his pace, his ears twitching as he scanned the chamber warily. “I don’t like this,” he growled softly. “It feels like a trap.”
I nodded in agreement, but something about the altar drew me forward. As we approached, I could make out strange symbols etched into its surface - symbols that seemed oddly familiar, though I couldn’t place why.
“Wait,” Sky said, grabbing my arm. “Don’t touch anything. We don’t know what kind of magic is at work here.”
But even as he spoke, the orb in my pocket began to pulse with warmth. Without thinking, I pulled it out. It glowed softly, the same ethereal light I’d seen before I’d touched it.
I held the Orb of Communion out, its pulsing light growing stronger as we approached the altar. Sky’s grip on my arm tightened, but he didn’t stop me. As we drew closer, the symbols on the altar began to glow in response, matching the rhythm of the orb’s pulsations.
“This is it,” I breathed, a mixture of excitement and fear coursing through me. “This is what the god was talking about. The path of the Twilight. This is how I become his champion.”
Sky’s ears flattened against his head, his blue eyes darting around the chamber nervously. “I still don’t like this. We should leave while we can.”
But I couldn’t turn back now. Something deep inside me knew that this was the place he spoke of, that I had to see it through.
With a deep breath, I stepped onto the dais, the orb held out before me.
I wanted the power to save my friends, to protect them from everything in this strange and dangerous world.
They were the only family I had and if I wanted to see them again, I’d need the god of the Twilight on my side.
A loud crash pulled my attention away from the pedestal and back toward the entrance to the room.
Stone and wall crumbled away, a cloud of dust billowing out in all directions in the dim light.
There, glowing like the sun, were two violet eyes sunk into a skeletal face.
A roar filled the cavern as the Guardian stepped forward, its grossly long limbs stretched wide like branches made of sinew.
My heart raced as the Guardian advanced, its massive form looming over us. Sky cursed under his breath, positioning himself between me and the creature, his spear at the ready.
“Whatever you’re going to do, do it fast!” he growled, his tail bristling. “We’re gonna be dead either way.”
I turned back to the altar, my hands shaking as I held the orb over the glowing symbols. The pulsing light grew more intense, matching the thunderous footsteps of the approaching Guardian. I could feel the raw power emanating from the orb, calling to something deep within me.
“Please,” I whispered, closing my eyes. “I accept your gift. Make me your champion.”
As if in response, the orb suddenly burst into brilliant light.
I felt a surge of energy course through my body, warm and electric.
The symbols on the altar flared to life, casting intricate patterns of light and shadow across the pedestal.
My eye caught a small indentation just the right size to fit the orb.
I glanced back, the Guardian nearly on top of us. Sky was muttering a spell under his breath and the end of his spear burst into green flames. He held it out, his muscles taut with resolve. Turning back, I lifted the orb up, took a breath, and slammed it downward into the pedestal.
The moment the orb made contact with the indentation, a blinding flash of light erupted from the altar.
I felt a surge of power shoot through my body, unlike anything I’d ever experienced before.
It was as if every cell in my being was suddenly charged with electric energy and like I was being turned inside out at the same time.
Pain filled me from head to toe along with a strange euphoria that pushed all thought and consciousness from my mind.
The Guardian let out an ear-splitting roar, recoiling from the intense light. Sky stumbled back, shielding his eyes with one arm while keeping his flaming spear pointed at the creature.
As the initial burst of light faded, I found myself enveloped in a swirling vortex of shadow and radiance. The two forces danced around me, intertwining and separating in a mesmerizing display. I could feel them seeping into my skin, filling me with a strange new power.
“What’s happening?” Sky shouted over the roar of energy surrounding us.
I turned to face him, my eyes reflected in his own. They were now glowing with an otherworldly light - one eye radiant gold, the other deep violet. The power of twilight surged through me, a perfect balance of light and shadow that I felt down to the dredges of my soul.
“I am the Champion of Twilight,” I heard myself say, my voice resonating with newfound authority.
The Guardian let out another deafening roar, lunging towards us with its massive claws extended. Without thinking, I raised my hand, and a barrier of shimmering energy materialized between us and the creature. The Guardian crashed against it, howling in frustration as it was repelled.
Sky stared at me in awe and disbelief. “How are you doing that?”
But my body didn’t respond. I heard him just fine, but it almost felt like I wasn’t in control of myself. It was like I was just sitting there, watching the scene unfold. I felt my lips move, but the voice that came out wasn’t entirely my own. It resonated with an otherworldly power as I spoke.
“The Guardian’s purpose is fulfilled. Your watch has ended. It’s time for you to rest at long last. A champion has been found.”
I raised both hands, palms outward. Streams of light and shadow flowed from my fingertips, swirling around the massive creature.
The Guardian thrashed and roared, but the energy enveloped it completely.
Its form began to shimmer and dissolve, breaking apart into motes of golden light that drifted upward and faded away.
As the last traces of the Guardian disappeared, the surge of power within me subsided. I stumbled, suddenly lightheaded. Sky rushed forward, catching me before I could fall.
“Easy,” he murmured, his gruff voice tinged with concern. “What the hell just happened?”
I blinked and smiled at him. “I’m the champion of the Twilight. Do you believe me now?”
And then my world went black.
