“Shit!” I whispered as I stood up and ran to grab my pants from where I’d discarded them on the floor.
Five seconds didn’t give me enough time to make myself presentable, assuming Savannah meant her warning literally.
I didn’t regret what Troy and I just did, especially with the pleasure of my orgasm still reverberating through my body, but I didn’t exactly want it to be public knowledge just yet either.
“I’ll stall,” Troy announced, standing up and yanking his pants back up.
He’d only pulled them down, not removed them entirely, so he could hide the evidence much more quickly than I could.
Wincing only slightly, he tucked his cock back into his underwear and zipped his pants up, striding over to stand in front of the door right as the lock clicked open.
His large body blocked the view into the room entirely when the door pushed open, buying me a few more precious seconds to make myself presentable as he greeted my Beta.
“What happened? Did you find out who was behind that phone call?”
“Let me in and I’ll tell you,” Savannah instructed, and when the large man didn’t move, she huffed in frustration. “Why are you being weird? You didn’t tie her up or anything, did you? I was joking about putting your clothes back on.”
I slipped back into my shoes, double checking that my pants were done up before I sat down on the bed and did my best to look unflustered. “Let her in, Troy. I don’t think Savannah’s a threat.”
My tone sounded no different than it had that morning, cool and detached, and when Troy looked back over his shoulder, I could see the appreciation in his eyes for my ability to slip into my Alpha role when needed.
Not everyone noticed the effort it took, and his acknowledgement of it, however small, made me feel a little more seen than I had before.
He stepped aside, letting Savannah enter, and my Beta burst into the room with the same energy she brought to every room, her curls bouncing around her shoulders as she moved. I thought her mate might be with her, since we were in his bunker, but she’d come alone.
“Jasper’s still at the pack house, keeping an eye on everything,” she explained, as if she’d heard my thoughts. “We haven’t made any progress on figuring out who’s been working with the attackers.”
“Why are you here, then?” Troy grumbled, not being rude, exactly, but clearly annoyed that there hadn’t been an earth-shattering reason for interrupting our intimate moment.
Savannah sent a withering glare in his direction. “Maybe I just wanted to make sure you weren’t taking advantage of the situation.” She paused, sniffing the air before her eyes narrowed. “Why does it smell like sex in here?”
Fuck. A werewolf’s sense of smell could really be too sensitive sometimes, and of course Savannah would point it out.
“That’s the soup,” I offered in explanation. “I tried my hand at cooking and I don’t have a lot of experience.”
Her nose scrunched in dismay. “Remind me not to let you cook for me anytime soon.”
Troy tried to stifle his laugh and ended up choking on it instead, leading to a coughing fit that he had to turn away to finish.
Changing the subject seemed like the best course of action. “You came here for a reason. What is it?”
“Oh. Right.” Straightening her shoulders, she switched back to business mode.
“A team from the Crimsontooth pack is here to assist but they can’t enter the territory because of the barrier in place.
Do you want to lower the barrier now, or should we tell them to find somewhere else to spend the night? ”
Confusion creased my brow as I processed that information. “Why are they here? They would have had to leave home hours ago, and we haven’t asked them for help yet.”
Her expression turned sheepish as she offered me a half-hearted shrug. “I might have alerted Vaughan to the situation this morning, after Kalo’s arrival. I didn’t ask him to send help yet, but apparently, he decided to take matters into his own hands. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep.”
If anyone had overstepped, it was Vaughan, but given the circumstances, I couldn’t fault his foresight. If we hadn’t had Kalo’s help, his men might truly have been needed.
Troy’s whole body stiffened at the sound of my former fiancé’s name. “The Alpha’s here?”
“Not personally. Leo, his Gamma, is leading the team. Their orders are to help us however we need them to. The men at the border post can speak to them through the barrier, but they can’t come in and our men can’t go out.”
That was what I’d asked Kalo for in my wish, and although it seemed inhospitable to deny our allies entry, I didn’t feel ready to lower the barrier yet, not when we hadn’t resolved anything. The Crimsontooth warriors would help but they didn’t make us invincible.
“Please ask them to find somewhere to spend the night. There’s a motel in the nearest human town that should have room this time of year. I’ll cover any expense. They can come back in the morning and hopefully we’ll have a clearer picture of our needs by then.”
“Sounds good,” Savannah agreed, and with that settled, her eyes swept over the interior of our small hideout. “This place really is tiny.”
“It’s cozy,” I agreed, keeping my eyes on her so I didn’t accidentally catch Troy’s gaze. I could imagine his smirk, remembering just how cozy we’d been with each other just a couple of minutes earlier. “Are we free to go now?”
The way Savannah grimaced gave me my answer even before she spoke the words out loud. “Jasper wants more time to investigate, and he thinks your absence might draw the conspirators out. Embolden them to make a move. He thinks you should spend the night here.”
My eyes immediately fell to the narrow bed I sat on, not nearly big enough for both me and Troy unless one of us was on top of each other.
“I’ll keep watch,” Troy immediately offered, sensing my thoughts as he often seemed to lately. “You can rest, Alpha.”
“I’ll come back in the morning, as soon as Jasper gives the okay, and bring you some fresh clothes then,” Savannah offered. “Do you need anything else in the meantime?”
I shook my head. “We have the essentials here and making too many trips back and forth, even if this is your house, could attract suspicion. I don’t love being cut off here, but I understand the reason for it. What about Kalo?”
She shrugged. “I gave him a guest room at the pack house and unlimited access to the kitchen, and he seems as happy as a clam. Jasper has a guard posted outside the door, for all the good that’ll do, and he’ll meet with you in the morning.”
It sounded like she had everything under control. “Alright. Thank you for handling all this. We’ll regroup in the morning and figure out what to do next.”
The Beta bid both of us good night, shooting Troy one more warning look before she left, as if reminding him not to push his luck, and the door clicked shut behind her when she left.
The electric whirring of the lock confirmed we were once again shut in, and this time, Troy entered an additional code into the keypad.
“That’ll stop anyone else from coming in from outside, even if they have the code,” he explained with a wry smile. “I didn’t think it would be necessary before, but now…”
He trailed off, and my skin instantly began to tingle under the heat of his gaze.
We had at least eight more hours locked up together in the small room with no distractions, no interruptions, and the pull of our mate bond that had only grown stronger since I got a taste of the kind of pleasure he could give me.
Could we make it through the whole night without this growing spark between us becoming an inferno?
