Reaching up, he wraps his hand around mine as his heart thunders beneath my palm.
“I remember the panic, which I knew was ridiculous. She’d have just biked home, and she’d be fine. But something in my gut told me that wasn’t right. My legs burned as I cycled as fast as I could, and the second I heard a siren in the distance, I knew.
“The rest of the journey is a blur. All I remember is turning the corner and finding all the flashing lights. The police cars, the ambulances, the fire engines. It was carnage, and I swear to God my heart actually stopped.
“There were three cars completely mangled, and as I approached, pushing officers aside so I could find Demi, my eyes landed on her crippled bike in the center of it all.”
“Oh my God,” I sob, needing to lift my hand to my mouth in shock but unable to with the force of Seb’s grip on me.
I stare down at him, my vision blurred with tears. Seeing his own pooling at the corners of his eyes does nothing to help me keep the emotion down.
“The driver who caused it was off-his-face drunk. He collided with another car at the junction with such speed that they spun out of control, hitting another car, and Demi on her bike as they skidded across the road.”
“Seb…”
“She looked so perfect, lying in the middle of the road. I expected her to just get up, shake it off and ask me to take her home. But she never did.”
My entire body trembles as I fight to stay strong for him.
“They think she died on impact. Her body stood no chance against the speed of the hit.
“S-she—”
Cutting off his words, I lean down and capture his quivering lips in an all-consuming kiss as my hand cups his face, my thumb brushing away the tear that finally drops.
I kiss him until we’re both breathless, but when it comes to an end, I barely move, just pressing my brow to his.
“Fuck. You’ve got a great way of making me feel better, Princess.”
I can’t help but laugh at his attempt at a joke.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I can’t even imagine.”
“I wish you could have met her,” he whispers.
“Me too.”
“Although, the more I think about it, the two of you would have given me hell between you.”
“Are you still close with your older sisters?” although from his confession about his niece earlier, I assume he must be.
“Yeah. When you’ve grown up with lives like ours, you’ve got to stick together.”
The fact that he hasn’t mentioned his mom at all kind of terrifies me. To the point that I swallow down the question about her that’s on the tip of my tongue. I’m not sure I want to put him through anything else after reliving the horror of that story.
“You can meet them when you come home.”
“When?” I ask with a smirk.
“Yeah, baby. When. There’s no if here. You’re mine now, remember?”
My jaw flexes, but when I see the corner of his mouth curl up in amusement, I know he’s just baiting me.
Asshole.
“Anyone would think you don’t want to get laid again.”
Throwing my legs over his waist, I roll my hips over his cock.
