Page 53 of Who’s Playing You (In The Nick of Time #1)

She on the other hand wasn’t really paying any mind to it whereas she was used to the irregularity of her cycles and to her it didn’t mean much if she was late or if she’d get her period twice in a month.

But knowing what I knew, I felt like all signs were pointing to a very exciting time in the near future for us.

The thoughts of our future family swirled in my mind while I sat eating lunch at The Rage facilities, and they brought a big smile to my face. Then my phone pinged with an incoming text.

The PITA sister:

I was just talking to Scottie…

Here we fucking go. What did she do now?

Yeah? She better be having a fan-fucking-tastic day.

The PITA sister:

Yeah so, it occurred to me…

Jesus Christ Nat. Spit it out.

The PITA sister:

Calm down, geez! Don’t need to bite my head off.

….

The PITA sister:

Rude. Anyway… when we were talking and something that you said to me after your first game came to me.

You said that I’d be an aunt soon if you had your way.

It didn’t register at the time, but after talking to Scottie today…

you two have clearly not talked about kids - so why would you say that to me?

Whether or not she and I have discussed it, that’s between us. I don’t get your point.

The PITA sister:

Nick. Come on. You can’t just be saying shit like that without it being something that’s been… idk! DISCUSSED with your partner!

The PITA sister:

And furthermore, you’re barely 20 - why would you be talking about marriage and kids? I know Scottie enough to know she’s not putting THAT pressure on you. But you two are in such completely different parts of your lives. Her talking marriage and kids would make perfect sense - but why are you?

I’m 23, not 13. And it’s not your place to judge and decide whether or not I’m ready for marriage or a family. Again, that’s between me and Scottie.

Why are you hitting me with all this shit right now anyway, Nat? I thought you and I cleared the air, we talked through things. I thought you were happy for us and happy that Scottie would be like a sister to you now.

The PITA sister:

Because, Nicholas! She’s MY best friend.

And I’m your brother, in case you forgot.

The PITA sister:

How could I ever?

The PITA sister:

Anyway!!! As I was saying, she’s MY best friend and I will forever have her back.

But she and I were talking about her … well, about stuff.

While we were talking, your comment from after the game clicked for me, and it became glaringly obvious that you two are NOT on the same page with this.

Like… you two haven’t even talked about it.

So as HER best friend, I wanted to talk to you - MY brOTHER - about this and warn you that you can’t be throwing statements like that around all willy-nilly.

You need to talk to HER first and you two need to be on the same page.

We are on the same page.

The PITA sister:

Nick. Come on. You have NOT talked to her about kids. I know this for a fact.

So? What’s it to you?

The PITA sister:

Again, she’s my best friend. I’ll forever have her back.

And right now I’m having her back when I tell you that I didn’t say anything to her about your comment, but that YOU should talk to her.

And this is me having YOUR back as your sister.

You two should have that talk and get on the same page about it, because…

well, maybe it’ll change things between you two.

What the fuck does that mean?

The PITA sister:

It’s not my relationship, Nick. It’s yours and Scottie’s. So you two talk.

So you’re just butting your nose in where it doesn’t really belong and stirring shit up and then just bouncing?

The PITA sister:

It’s called being a good friend AND sister, Nick! God, you can be such an asshole sometimes, you know that? I’m trying to HELP you! And her.

The PITA sister:

It’s your life - do what you want. IDGAF. But I DO care what happens to Scottie because she’s in deep, alright? And I have a feeling if you fuck this up with her, that it has the potential to really hurt her. I’m trying to avoid that. So for HER sake, just talk to her. That’s all I’m saying.

The PITA sister:

Also, I’d hate to go to prison for having to do you bodily harm if you hurt her. So there’s also that.

You seem to have a lot of opinions.

The PITA sister:

Whatever Nick. Do what you want.

And with that Nat stopped texting me, but I was fuming. I didn’t need anyone butting into my relationship with Scottie. It was ours. No one else’s. I’d worked too hard, for too many years, to get us to where we were.

And now Nat came in here saying I needed to talk to Scottie about our future nuptials and family? Fuck that shit.

I’d already made my intentions to Scottie very clear. I was ALL in. That meant marriage and everything that that promised.

As for starting a family… yeahhhh. I guess Nat had a point on that front. Scottie and I hadn’t technically talked about having kids - not yet at least. I knew she and Earl had had some issues, and after some “detective” work on my part, I found out that Earl was a fucking liar.

Color me surprised.

I figured Scottie and I would let that conversation happen naturally, like it happens in most relationships as the relationship progresses. First you date, get to know one another and then you move forward to the next steps. At some point you talk about long-term stuff, marriage and children.

Scottie and I were working towards all of that.

But I also knew that with my recent efforts to get her pregnant, that she and I would be having that very conversation, very soon.

God willing.
