Page 107 of Who's Loving You
One hand balances the martini glass, trying not to spill it down his back, and the other hand palms the back of his head as I dive into a kiss. He wastes no time in grabbing me and returning it with fervor. His hands glide up and down my back, and his moan into my mouth is pure music. Our tongues reunite, missing the way they danced with one another. No one else kisses like Nic. Hemakes my heart race, my knees weak, and turns my mind to mush.
It’s the best feeling in the world.
We kiss like we aren’t standing in the middle of a crowded room with a captive audience, and we fade away into our own world where nothing can break us.
“Awww. You guys made up.”
Except Lucy with her cooing and tears. Our foreheads press together and we share the same smile and adoring eyes.
“Attention everyone,” a voice booms through the room and we all fall silent. “The dining room is now open. Please eat and drink and dance to your hearts delight.” Killeen stands at the top of the double winding staircase, Monty next to her and a drink held high.
The guests clap and begin moving towards the tent where lavish tables have been set up. A band already plays, putting everyone in a jovial mood, and the four of us look for a table to occupy.
“There’s one,” Chase points out and waves to Bash, letting him know to save us a seat.
Nic twines our fingers together and he tucks me close to his side. We only get a few steps when a hand on his arm stops us.
“Nico,” a woman purrs. “I thought that was you. It’s so wonderful to see you again. I was hoping you’d be here.” We face the woman whose voice drips in allure and malice, and Nic turns stiff. “We’ve missed you. Where have you been?”
His jaw clicks with anger and his eyes shoot fire at her. “What are you doing here Sonja?”
“I was invited.” She points to an older gentleman that looks about fifteen years her senior and filthy rich.
Sonja?The bitch from the club?
When her hand reaches out once more to touch him, I grab her wrist and squeeze it painfully.
“Donottouch him.” Her face blanches before taking on the appearance of the Devil’s mistress.
“You must be the girlfriend.” Her voice is low and threatening, but she has no idea who she’s fucking with.
“I am. And I’ll be your worst fucking nightmare too if you touch him or even breathe in his direction again.” She tugs on her hand, trying to snatch it away from my vice grip.
Instead of letting her run off to her lair where she no doubt plots her evil plans, I advance on her, pushing her through people as they work to get to their seats. I don’t stop until her back smacks against a supportive column, her head connecting with it.
“I will destroy your life and not feel one ounce of remorse. You tried to ruin a man whose only crime was rejecting a tired, old whore with a sad and empty life. Stay thefuckaway from Nic or I will own the last goddamn breath you take. I know a lot of people that would jump at the chance to help me bury you, so try me. I am not the bitch you want to piss off.”
Her eyes narrow and she blows smoke from her nostrils. The guests continue to move around us, pretending not to see the altercation. I drop her wrist and wrap my velvety hand around her throat and lean in to whisper in her ear.
“Now get your date and walk away before I help his wife take every last penny he owns. Crawl back into the shit hole you came out of andneverlook back.” I pull back with a tight and wide smile and drop my hand. “Okay. Awesome. So great meeting you.” I take two steps back before deciding to put a period on it. “Oh. You almost forgot your drink.”
I lift my hand with unhurried precision until it hangs over her head. I tip the glass and watch the sticky liquid pour down her face, taking her mascara and fake lashes with it. Lucy snorts somewhere behind me, probably guzzling down her drink and popping peanuts in her mouth watching the drama unfold.
I’m yanked back by my hand and smash against Nic’s chest. He kisses me harder than before, and as rapidly as he began, he stops.
“Let’s go,” he growls, and throws Sonja one last look of disgust.
I toss the empty glass over my shoulder to Lucy and she catches it, winking and mouthingfuck yeahas I’m dragged away.
“I came here with Lucy and Chase,” I tell him, my breath stuttering as we weave in and out of people.
“I have my car. Excuse me,” he says, pushing people this way and that way just like the skilled player he is.
“Val! Where are you two rushing off too?” We spin to see Monty and Killeen standing at the bottom of the stairs with matching grins.
“We have some making up to do,” Nic shouts and I slap my hand over his mouth before he can spill any details.
“Thank you for the lovely evening. I’m sorry to cut out so soon. But we’ll see you in January for playoffs.” I smile warmly but also rushed because if I’m not careful, Monty will pull us into a forty minute conversation and Nic will end up jizzing in his pants.
