My cousin stared at me, wide-eyed. She put her hands up. “Okay, big killer. How do you plan to get rid of these bodies after you do whatever you’re going to do with them?”

“See those oil drums? Body in, top on, drill holes, then drop in the Sea of Cortez. The holes ensure it will sink.” I thought about how I wanted to do this. This wasn’t a fly-by-night plan.

I watched Galiana’s eyebrows dance up her forehead. “How do you know people won’t be out there when you go to drop the bodies. Wait, you have a boat?”

My father shook his head. “Yeah, we have a boat. I want to hear this plan too. People fish and all kind of shit out there.”

I rolled my eyes. “First, do you think I’m going to go out a little then dump the bodies? One, the Sea of Cortez is in Mexico. I went out there last week to go fishing. Daddy, that’s where the fish came from.”

He nodded. “Your mama liked those fish too. What time is the best time?”

“Around four in the morning.” My head turned toward the sound of moaning. “Taco Shell, how was your nap?”

It took her a moment to get herself together. “Wh-what’s going on? Who are these people? Are y’all going to help us?”

“Ma’am, don’t you think if we were going to help you that we would have done that by now?” Galiana quipped. She turned toward me with crossed arms. “I blame you for this foolishness. When you met this girl and she told you that her name was Faheeta, you should have known her ass would fold.”

My laughter came from my gut. “I see what you did there. Fajitas fold!”

Uncle Dan snickered. “Alright, what the fuck are you going to do once people do realize they’re missing? That’s going to happen, little girl.”

My head fell back. “Taco Shell, shut the hell up.” Her whimpering gave me a headache. “Guys, can we please just let me work my plan. Both of their cell phones are in their hotel rooms in Vegas along with their smart watches and all that stupid shit. I got this.”

Fiona tapped on her phone after she asked me what hotel they stayed in. “Mauri, I need you.” She walked out. The name Mauri was familiar to me. Her technology expertise crossed over into my electrical expertise at times.

“How about we just let her do her thing so we can get these fuckas out of here,” Jacob said. “I want to get my ass back to some wind. This dry ass heat in the middle of the night here is not what it is.”

We all laughed. “Well, let’s get to it. I’m ready to get in my bed.” I took a final look at the people that thought I was to be played with.

My best friend since middle school who I thought knew me in and out.

I hated that I was loyal to her, but in my heart, I didn’t think that she was always a ho ass traitor.

The problem was since she was able to do it, it was always in her.

James, he was just a fuck ass nigga. I wouldn’t put too much stock into him.

He was D.J.’s father, and that was all I could barely give him.

It wasn’t like he was the doting father to be when I was pregnant, and now I knew why.

I turned the voltage up all the way and closed my eyes before I hit the button to light their asses up. They both screamed until life left their bodies. I hope they got their spirits right when they were taking their naps.

A Few Days Later . . .

As far as I was supposed to know, Faheeta was away at a work conference. The conference was a real thing that served as a perfect cover-up for her baecation with James. As far as James was concerned, we broke up, so I had no reason to care about where he would be.

Every day, I called and texted my best friend to talk, but she had not answered my call. That was the reason that I was at her mother’s house. “I mean, I don’t care how busy she is. She has never gone this long without answering my calls, Mama Tela. Have you talked to her?”

She shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “No, I haven’t heard from her, which is weird. It’s not like her to not check in on Pepper.”

I glanced over at Pepper who sat comfortably in her swing, asleep. It was crazy that now I could see the features of James in her. I always said that she looked like her mother. Any features that I saw in Pepper and didn’t see in Faheeta, I assumed it belonged to her bitch ass baby daddy.

“Um, have you called the hotel or her boss?” I knew she hadn’t, because something told me her ass knew that her daughter was out there whoring with James.

I couldn’t be mad at her for having her daughter’s back.

The question to myself was whether she told Faheeta that she was dead ass wrong for fucking my man.

She got up from her seat. “I’ll do that. I was actually about to take Pepper to my sister’s house.”

I stood from my seat. “Oh, I’m so sorry for popping up like this. I was just worried. I’m trying everything I can to not fly my ass out to Arizona and look for her ass.”

Mama Tela gave me a fake ass smile. “I’ll make sure I call and check. As soon as I find something out, I’ll let you know.”

I gave her a hug, went over and kissed a sleeping Pepper on her forehead, then was on my way. How did I not scope out these snakes around me? I had to do better because this shit could never happen again.

A few days passed before I heard from Faheeta’s mammy. Her ass called me in a panic to tell me that her daughter was missing. I jumped into action to ask how I could help. It wasn’t until after Faheeta was reported missing that it came out that she wasn’t on her work trip.

“Well, if she wasn’t on a work trip, where was she? Why would she lie? We’re best friends. She could tell me anything,” I said to Mama Tela with confusion laced throughout my face.

Mama Tela held Pepper, but her ass was in a daze. She asked me to come to her house to talk. When she came out of her daze to focus on me, tears wet the corners of her eyes. “Did you know James is missing too?”

Showtime! “Wait, what? What does that have to do with Faheeta being missing? I didn’t know that he was missing. I blocked his ass after we broke up, so I haven’t talked to him.”

The tears finally fell from her eyes. “Um, James and Faheeta were together in Vegas. She wasn’t in Arizona.”

My head tilted. “I—I don’t get it. Why would they be together?

They hate each other.” I paused before I allowed my eyes to bulge.

“They were together because they’re together,” I said with a mumble.

Come on tears . . . Don’t fail me now. I wanted to pat myself on the shoulder when they started to fall.

“I’m so sorry you had to find out this way. They went out to Vegas to get married,” she said through her bullshit ass tears. “They loved each other and wanted to just be a family with their daughter.”

I choked on my own spit. “Wh-what? Their daughter? No, that can’t be right.” I dropped my face into my hands to conceal my smile.

I didn’t know that their asses were out there to get married. That made me feel less guilty about sending them to the pearly gates’ entry line. I was so interested to know how they planned to keep this from me. Both of them were stupid as shit.

“Mekole, I’m so sorry. I told Faheeta that she was dead ass wrong. I didn’t find out about them being together until she got pregnant,” Mama Tela revealed. “I was not happy about it, but she’s my daughter.”

Yep, your dead daughter. “Why are you telling me this now?” My head shook, and tears continued to fall as I asked my question.

“I’m telling you because I don’t want you to be blindsided if it comes out later down the line. I know this is a lot, and I’m sorry,” she said. “The police are saying that it looks like a robbery of some sort, but James and Faheeta are nowhere to be found.”

I intentionally appeared to be in a daze.

I broke my daze to glance at Pepper. No matter the situation, she was a gorgeous baby.

I would miss her, but there was no way I could continue to be around her.

“I hope they’re found, Mama Tela. I really do.

” I got up from my seat before I spoke. “As far as me in connection with them, fuck them.”

I turned on my heels and walked my ass out of the house.

From this point on, it was fuck all of them.

As far as James’s and Faheeta’s bodies being found, good luck with that shit.

The Sea of Cortez was 9,843 feet deep and filled with a diversity of sharks.

Mauri made sure there was no trace of me on any camera from Vegas to New Mexico.

When I got home, I sat in my den and looked around my house. I couldn’t call it my home. Since all of this had happened, it felt like anything but home. I pulled my phone out to make a call.

The call was picked up after three rings. “Hey, Cousin. How are you?” Fiona asked with sympathy in her voice.

I was silent for a moment before I let out a cry. “Fiona, I—I just found out that James cheated on me with Faheeta. My fucking goddaughter, Pepper, is his! How could they do this to me?”

Her gasp was loud. “Mekole, please tell me you had a bad dream and you’re just telling me about it. No, Faheeta wouldn’t do that to you. Y’all have been down since, what, middle school?”

I wanted to laugh at how genuinely surprised she sounded.

Yeah, I thought of everything. What girl wouldn’t call someone to tell them about their boyfriend and best friend betraying them?

“Fiona, I feel like I’m going crazy. Like, this girl named me her daughter’s godmother and knew that my fucking boyfriend was her father. Who the fuck does that?”

“I’ll tell you who, a trifling ass bitch!” Fiona spat. “I should come beat that bitch up. She got the game fucked up. Have you talked to her?”

I sniffled. “No, I haven’t talked to her or James’s bitch ass. The only reason I know is because they snuck away on a trip or something to Vegas together, and now, they’re missing. Faheeta’s mama, TorTela, told me because she thinks it will come out. She didn’t want me to be blindsided.”

There was silence on the other end for a second.

“Did you just say her mother’s name is TorTela?

Do they have Mexican descent? There is no way someone named their child TorTela, then that bitch said well, fajitas are made with tortillas.

Wait, then the daughter’s name is Pepper.

They do go in fajitas. Yeah, their names are suspect as hell. ”

I wanted to laugh so damn bad, but I had to stay in fucking character.

I planned to kick Fiona’s ass later for her stupid ass comment.

“Fiona, really? What am I supposed to do? I don’t want people to ask me about them.

I can’t believe I was concerned about that bitch because I hadn’t spoken to her, and she was in Vegas fucking James.

Wait, no, they were there to get married. ”

“I’m sorry, Mekole. They say laughter is good for the soul. I mean so is beating a bitch’s ass, but we can’t do that,” Fiona said with no emotion. “Um, just come here. You were talking about moving here before you got pregnant. Maybe this is a sign.”

As planned, I huffed, then asked what if the cops thought it was suspicious that I left like I did.

We went back and forth about it and other bullshit before I agreed to go see her.

She was right. Before I found out that I was pregnant, I had plans to make my house a furnished rental property and move to Charleston, South Carolina.

“Okay, I’ll come, but I have to see if I can get a job down there if I want to stay. ”

“Be happy that you have a cousin with connections. Croy and I are friends with someone who owns a manufacture home business,” she said. “We’ll reach out to him. Plus, Galiana’s husband’s best friend owns an all-inclusive apartment complex. I’ll reach out to him if you decide to stay long-term.”

Fiona and her friends had no idea how much I appreciated them for everything.

They didn’t have to implicate themselves in two murders, but they did.

I was the type of person that never bothered anyone.

I loved who I loved, liked what I liked, and was loyal to who was loyal to me.

I cared until I couldn’t care anymore. Once I stopped caring because of betrayal, then that was when I became a problem.
